I'm feeling a bit troubled by this accident. I don't want to be whining on about it as I appreciate that many people have had much worse accidents and got back on a bike.
What is bothering me is that if I can just fall off my bike for no particular reason other than maybe I was not paying great attention or had a loosened my hand grip a bit, then it can just happen again.
I'm feeling that I don't want this to happen again.
I do want to to get back on a bike but I want to have a reason to think I've learned how to avoid this.

All totally normal feelings after an off. It takes time not just for the physical side to heal, but often longer to get over the psychological side. Confidence is really important to enjoying riding and you’ll get it back. Be patient

thanks; good advice.

Touch wood no recent tumbles but a "controlled put down" on a slippery leaf covered hill to avoid running into stationary traffic dented my confidence for a while.
I'd say be cautious but not freet, stay aware and don't push it because you've nothing to prove.
Heal up quick and you'll be back in the groove before you know it.

Definitely this ^^^. I had a fairly innocuous slow speed tumble on a hairpin in Mallorca - early morning, heavy dew on the road, and Vittoria Kevlar/SiO2 Compound of Death tyres. Despite not really being hurt in the fall, it properly shook me up, and for about a year after that Cycliste would kick my arse on tight hairpiny descents, despite my status as a Naturally Gifted Descender. I got over it eventually, although I'm still a bit tenative on wet hairpins. Which is probably not such a bad thing.

Take it slow man. Similar situation here. Still apprehensive about lose corners, traffic, descending, everything. But what's the rush? I can go full gas uphill, right?
Sorry, this was aimed at @ChasnotRobert

Still good advice! Mind you, full gas uphill for me is not, at the moment, particularly fulsome. My power to weight ratio has been adversely affected by both metrics going in the wrong direction...

What are you waiting for then? Get up that hill. For reps.

I live in Cambridgeshire in the deepest, darkest, flattest Fens. There are no hills. The average altitude on my standard 20 and 30 mile training loops is below sea level.

You need a Dutch mountain then.
That said, I get you. Struggling to get back into it myself ATM. 6 months nearly since break. Like I said above, I'm risk averse to the max. But also my shoulders are only slowly coming to the table. Did my first 100k Ride since accident on Friday. Power not what it was.

• #2237
Are you even able.to see your partner ATM?
-
• #2238
Nope. Haven't seen Cycliste in person for over 4 months now. No idea when I will be able to be with her again either.

• #2239
So sorry to hear that :(

• #2240
Cheers. Shit happens.

Fuck
That sounds tough. Hope it can be resolved soon. -

a bit tenative
The worst thing is that it turned you American.
Which is probably not such a bad thing.
The only bad crash I've had on a bike was when I was ten. Looking back on it, I now think of it as a good thing, because I'm certain it helped prevent worse injuries in the long run. It was a crash I should really have had when I was five or so, but the only injury I can remember from that time that was caused by me running or cycling too fast was a grazed knee, which didn't do much for learning.

Ta - skin will be back in a week or two but derailed is bent :(

I rode over a pothole I knew was there, the bars sort of jumped out of my hands, front wheel twisted and I went down. Road rash and bruises, the pain was agonising but I didn't make a fuss.
The point is we all mess up.

Indeed. I'm getting towards accepting this. I know I messed up.
I checked my strava track and found that I hit the deck at 30kph.
I'm going to buy a new helmet and some new sunglasses.
Maybe a new bike as well, at some point. I've been wanting to get a frame from Sam at Stayer for quite a few years.

new bike
This is absolutely the correct response to a crash

All I got was two bags of rice, so I couldn't turn my head at night :(

Sorry to hear about your accident and hope you get back on a ride soon.
But no rush. I took a bad fall in a similar way a few years ago, and after three months of crutches I found i enjoyed a slower pace - not all the time, mostly on shorter rides round town - so as part of my recovery i ended up getting this bike out of the shed and found i really enjoyed it inbetween longer rides https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/313211/#comment13956369
Brooks has not fared too badly
