A few years ago I was doing some freelance design work at a trade mag and one of the sub editors had gone to her aunts house that weekend to find an embroidered cushion on the sofa with the words “Arbeit macht frei” emblazoned on it in cute, homely lettering.
She had no idea of the historic context of the phrase and had seemingly just done a google search for mottos about working hard paying off etc and stumbled upon it. Needless to say she was quite mortified about it when confronted by a slightly concerned niece.
This thread just reminded me of it.
