That’s certainly survived its three decades well.

Why not just get new pads and tyres first before you decide to make the jump to 1x given everything is in such good condition.
-

Echo that. Lovely bike, worth giving it good thrash after minimal fettling before thinking about radical upgrades. Of course to be period correct tyres should be tioga city slicker rear and a metro up front for max skids and wet weather danger on the road.

I mean - this certainly does make sense!
Any tyre recommendations would be well received. Running 26x1.95 on there at the minute and the clearance is fine but would like something far less knobbly.

Another Courier on the forum, wow! Man, I really need to get my hands on one haha. Following this with great interest.
maybe some bullmooses
Yes!
I have 26er wheels with 7 speed freewheel - does this mean I need to get a new wheelset (rear wheel at minimum?) in order for me to house a 10/11 speed? Or is there some witchcraft that i could conjure to allow me to keep the current wheelset but upgrade?
You can swap the freehub to one that fits 8+ gears.
the rear spacing is 130
Sure about that? If so, I'm not sure a new freehub will fit but I might be terribly wrong.

So various bits and bobs have started to appear for the first stage of converting.
SwissStop Viking Pros that I was able to liberate from a pal - they work a treat on my SS so figured they would be better than the dross that are on the bike at the moment.
Panaracer gravelkings courtesy of Tijs's recommendation - although getting them in 26ers proved to be a good few hours of web trawling. Managed to get some at not too bad of a price in the end.
Got the Nitto B906 Bullmoose bars - preferred this more retro look than the bars that have a full curved bar -just waiting for the stem and the cable hanger to turn up before I can do the install.
Once this is all done and i've thrashed it about a bit more I'll take the next steps onto other improvements.
Feel that a 1x would also help me shed some weight because it does feel a bit on the heavier side than it could be. In saying that - it's basically all original - so perhaps have unrealistic expectations of how light one of these beasts should be!
Anyway - progress is being made - hopefully get to fit all these new bits over the weekend and get out and see how it feels.

@vp1337 yes - have measured the rear spacing and measured again! Definitely clocking in at 130. So have been doing some investigative work as to what my options could be.
Not quite sure i'm ready for the old Sheldon Brown home made cold setting set up at this point! Watch this space though!
-
• #13
If you want to uppity-grade but not cold-set, you can just have a new wheel laced up (using the old rim?) using a road hub (105 etc...)

If it's 130mm spacing you could replace it with a road 8/9/10-speed hub and cassette, no? Or if it's a 7-speed freehub you could modify higher-speed cassettes by removing the smallest socket; 8-from-9 and 9-from-10 cassettes should both fit on a 7-speed freehub body.

Where did you order the GKs from?
-
• #16
Bike24 has them.

• #17
As Tijs says - got mine from bike24. Appears as though it’s the only place in stock but they only have them in black which suited me perfectly.

Great to see another Courier Comp getting the treatment, this one looks in particularly good nick!
Love the lava paint, definitely keep it. Perfect choice of parts so far too.

Let me know how you get on with 'em! Very tempted to get them as well.

I'll keep you posted. They look quality so hoping they perform too! Last few bits I have on order should arrive by the middle of the week so reckon the first test ride of them will be by the end of the week.

Nice, and VERY exciting delivery today of a new cable hanger - so now i have all the bits for stage one of the rebuild. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get that done tomorrow.
So that will be bar replacement, new pads and tyre switch.
Hunting around for a decent wheelbuilder to be able to help me switch up the rear hub to allow the 1x drive train switch.
26" rims with 130 spacing, but allowing a 10/11 speed cassette means that off the peg is not really an option. Emailed Spa cycles but think that is going to be quite expensive. But useful to get their input anyway.
So if any one else here has a suggestion - I'm on the hunt for someone local (London) and decent!
Anyway - hopefully more exciting build related posts soon.

Can’t wait to see this one built up!
I’m also on the hunt for a good wheelbuilder in East London, let me know if you find one.

Big clean up day today - was looking all good on the surface but on closer inspection things were super dry and crusted on.
Managed to get it down to the cranks but found a pesky non-allen key bolt with no way to get out so headed down to the LBS for a hand. (Bike House in Kentish Town - strongly suggest you avoid this place - crap service) got the bolt removed (after 15 minutes) and then was able to strip down to the frame and clean it all up.
Tried to service the headset which had years of old grease accumulated inside and a slightly knackered caged bearing so got a replacement set on order. Now I have a pile of individual but beautifully clean parts all ready to be reassembled.
New hubs have arrived but still on the hunt for that elusive, highly recommended wheel builder, so will continue this whilst away next week.
Away for a week and can't wait to start putting all the bits back together on it - also must do a deep dive onto the new drive train too.

Dibs the bullmoose bars if you decide you want a quill!
Have been looking for a fun steel MTB into an adventure/off road/gravel mishmash (AORGMM) build for a while and when this Courier Comp came up for cheap on eBay I jumped on it.
It's in smashing condition - basically all as bought, helped by the fact that the guy who owned it was about 5'5 despite owning this 21" frame, so has only been lightly ridden recently - think I'm now third owner.
Took it for a spin the other day on some light offroad stuff and all works smoothly - so what better way to celebrate than to strip it down and change various bits, just because I can!
Had been prepared for full strip down and respray but the paint is in almost perfect condition and actually really like the red crackle.
As for the build - it'll be my first foray into MTB/adventure conversion territory so it will undoubtedly cost me way more than I want, will cause my countless headaches with various bits and bobs, but it's all part of the fun (I guess)
Ultimate aims are a
1x drivetrain (10/11 speed?)
stem and bars switch up - will keep flat bars - maybe some bullmooses? but get a reduction in the stem reach
Get some brakes that actually stop the bike (maybe just a pad change as i think cantis just fit the look
Tyre change (something with a little less rolling resistance for on road riding)
First headaches
I have 26er wheels with 7 speed freewheel - does this mean I need to get a new wheelset (rear wheel at minimum?) in order for me to house a 10/11 speed? Or is there some witchcraft that i could conjure to allow me to keep the current wheelset but upgrade?
If new set is needed - the rear spacing is 130 - a cursory glance as shown many newer wheelsets to have 135. Do i cold set? Can i forgo that and sort of just jam it in?
Final tyre question - tyres - Need 26ers obviously - any good recommendations for chunky tyres for this kind of horror build that'll be good both on and off road.
