Why do you train?

  • Wait, YAL actually trains?

  • extremely valid question and at risk of crashing the server with the views and hearts for this post, let me speak:

once i borrowed my wife's gps watch thing to go for a run and i thought 'i'll use this strava thing to log it' but i accidentally recorded the run as a swim and then gave up. this would have been in 2014 or so.

these days, i mainly train on derailleur-free machines to retain my status as a top 5 local dilf

  • I’ve seen him race.

  • He told me he was just gifted

  • does riding up and down a dual carriageway a bit for ten minutes before a time trial count as training?

  • At the risk of being genuine it's to go far enough on a bike to make the ride feel like a mini adventure. For me that's about 80 miles+, so I like being in good enough shape to be able to do that at any point in the year. It's also for the sensation of speed under my own effort. It makes it kinda stupid I like riding fixed so much because it makes both those things harder (but there is charm to that too). By the time I realised I loved going fast on a bike I had a family and my youth behind me. So instead of ever being able to be Fast - actual road racers and the Broluers who do 90 mile hilly Kent loops at 22mph etc - I put in the extra effort to feel Just A Little Bit Faster. Swooping through some marshland at a good pace, well it's just about the best thing in the world (as far as hobbies go).

  • Why does @Señor_Bear train?

  • He hasn't for the past 6 weeks, or so he claims.

  • See #41

  • Banging walls with a hammer is training

  • He told me he trains to ward off existential dread

  • existential dreads

  • Mid life crisis.

  • I’m aware that this was a troll summon, but you win as it was nibbling away at me during this evening’s definitely-not-secret turbo session.

The flippant answer is ‘a combination of mild aptitude, too much free time and a limitless reserve of self-loathing’.

Thankfully, through the passage of time and a bit of work, I’ve been able to reduce all of those and am much better for it. Classic 6pt never ‘trained’ though. I just rode a lot and enjoyed the whoosh of it all. If I could get more whoosh out of a ride it was a good day. I ‘train’ now to keep on top of the kgs and retain a modicum of fitness on the off chance I ever get out for a ride again. It’s no fun when you’re shit.

  • It’s no fun when you’re shit.

The reason most of us stick at it. Once you've reached a certain level, you don't want to drop below that again 'cos it's shit. And hurts.

  • My specialty is letting the pendulum swing ever further from ‘ok’ and having an increasingly miserable time getting back to par while past glory gets further and further away. It’s great.

Maybe I haven’t fully addressed the self loathing.

  • I'm trying to avoid emergency services having to knock down a wall and roll me onto a cetacean bed to get my out of the flat.

  • I love the feeling of "I'm sure I used to be better than. This".

  • I mainly train for the digital Kudos from Amey.

  • i don't care about most people on here though

Good to have a comprehensive list of people on here who you care about

    Poor @Sparky

  • I know why he trains, why does @t-v train?

  • Page 3 and still very little about trains in this thread

    I’m becoming increasingly disillusioned

  • That and one day I dream of beating @dbr's Sa Calobra time.

😂 if you stop selling all your bikes and turbos you’d do it.

I train to stay ahead of @lowbrows on the Sa Calobra leaderboard.

  • still very little about trains in this thread
