At the risk of being genuine it's to go far enough on a bike to make the ride feel like a mini adventure. For me that's about 80 miles+, so I like being in good enough shape to be able to do that at any point in the year. It's also for the sensation of speed under my own effort. It makes it kinda stupid I like riding fixed so much because it makes both those things harder (but there is charm to that too). By the time I realised I loved going fast on a bike I had a family and my youth behind me. So instead of ever being able to be Fast - actual road racers and the Broluers who do 90 mile hilly Kent loops at 22mph etc - I put in the extra effort to feel Just A Little Bit Faster. Swooping through some marshland at a good pace, well it's just about the best thing in the world (as far as hobbies go).
