Ah, thanks, I should have thought of that, of course. The glueing-together I'd heard of before, and I suppose metal supports are obvious if you think about it for a moment.
It's not that lego won't self support at that scale, it's more that it becomes unwieldy and expensive because you have to build it almost solid
