Looks like vertical dropouts. Unless you’re OK with a tensioner for SS, I would turn it into an upright-ish, basket beater for trips to the beer store, etc.

Rebuild it and then take it round all the main trail centres in your area.

Hmmm I do already have a SS basket-equipped round-town/commuter bike though.
To get it running again it needs at a minimum chain, cassette, BB (seized in and so so rough) cables, pads and tyres. And grips and saddle I suppose.

I’ve got a Marin of similar vintage to do something with, I’ll be doing the upright / basket / errand runner thing with it. Keeping it 7-speed with cantis because all that works well and there’s no point spending money going 1x to make it less functional. It’ll be getting a BMX or MX handlebar and BMX stem to make it comfy as these bikes are very long and low, it makes me fret about a builders bum when I’m in jeans.

Interesting. At some point in this bikes history the front shifter has been cut off the brake lever unit, and a grip shift put on - I despise them. So might make this 1x. If I can pick up a cheap derailleur and thumb shifter I’ll increase it from 7sp...

Looks like a deep money pit to me

Nothing more expensive than a cheap bike

I have a Marin Eldrige Grade from maybe 94. Its a great bike ;-) really like it.
Picked up this today for small change off one my old man’s mates. Dead rusty, but solid frame. Not quite sure what to do with it... old school gravel bike for the mrs? Rat bike for the city? Fat tyre SS? Bin it?
Inspire me!
