Has anyone ever used a solar powered car battery trickle charger? Was thinking of getting one and wanted to know if there was any gotchas or if they actually don't work or anything like that.

Does something like the Deore XT M786 not work for 9-spd friction? With its limit screws adjusted accordingly.
I don't know, just thinking that it should do, as it's designed for 10-spd so probably has the capacity for 9...?! Would be interested in the answer if more knowledgeable folk know.

@Belagerent I think if they were any good everyone would have one. I'm assuming you have no access to an electricity supply. If you have such access a conventional "intelligent" trickle charger is a better bet.

Most cars have a lighter socket that's , which is no bloody use, so you need to wire to the battery direct or come up with some other scheme. I rigged up a cable to route mine through the ODB2 port, which is usually unswitched, but I don't know if you can buy such a thing.
Solar panels output orders of magnitude more power if they get direct sunlight, so ideally you want it in a south facing window and don't park under trees / buildings / etc. Inevitably they work less well in winter.
And if you're not using the car for long periods, disconnecting the battery is a better bet, electronic tantrums permitting.
(You might get better answers in the car thread)

appreciate the responses guys. Sounds like I should just try and run the car more rather than spend 30 quid on what might be a waste.

wow, thank you! Found myself watching the old spurcycle Kickstarter video - i'd always wondered what frame he was riding.
The wonders of LFGSS... -

Not sure. I used to run 1*10 with a deore xt and rivendell silver shifters, but I had to file away loads of the pod body to get the lever to travel enough.
The pods I have don't really have a lot of material to file...
I've been thinking Sram as the do a 1:1 actuation, which I assume would work.. just seeing if anyone's tried it!

£30 once is a lot less than spending £60 on a new battery every year *, which is what I ended up doing on my last car. I’d still look into it.
(* Starter batteries stop holding a decent charge if you let let them go flat more than a couple of times)

It appears to be a rather slow thread, but thanks nonetheless.
Also I hope you've come to your senses and stopped backing the Bruins

That's an insert of some sort which would ordinarily be embedded in something made of plastic / GRP.

It's just a punch for cutting holes. The shaped end is sharp, you place it on whatever you want to punch a hole in (leather, for example) and hit the other end with a hammer.
It's called a hollow punch

How tight is tight when you put a cassette on a freehub!? I still think I must have destroyed something, but there was play for a long time and now there isn't :-/
Pretty sure it helps prevent any new stalks from sprouting up.
