WANTED: Aero Gran Compe brake pads

Posted on
  • I'm after a set (or a couple of sets!) of Aero Gran Compe brake pads to fit the AGC-300 caliper:

If anyone has any let me know!

    Many thanks

  • I looked all over for these last year for my lopro but ended up selling the calipers as the pads are like rocking horse doo!

I found some in the states via ebay but they were a very silly price.

Good luck, they are out there.

  • Both dirk and Jon ,I know this isn’t the exact solution but I too have a pair of these and a lot of [cheap] modern brake shoes have a little extend piece of the shoes where the bolt threads in ,obv intend to countersink in modern brake arm slots but also slotted perfectly into the ‘cam’ disc on the original as in the photo ,cheers Stef,p.s there was an American site I think called Yellow jersey that sometimes showed the blocks for sale but it seemed a defunct or non- updated page

  • Cheers @BeaconJon - I think I've got another years worth of pad left before I give on these completely - they are the only brake I've found that fits this particular bike (even with the eccentric bolt my mate machined for me to raise them up another cm or so!)

  • Thanks very much - I'll have a look into alternative pads at some point, might have to rethread them to fit the threads maybe?

  • Might of created some confusion ,don’t think any retreading required,I was using new shoes and pads and the shoes had the same size piece that the bolt threaded into sticking out as the originals in the photo ,shoes were probably Ashima or somesuch ,I did a build using the brakes and looked for a solution as soon as it looked like there was no chance of getting original blocks ,I had to physically go into a shop[condor] to look at various brake shoes as not every brand has the ‘stud’ sticking out and on-line photos often weren’t clear enough to show this

  • hi,
i know this thread is historic, but i need to get some brake blocks for agc300s too.

any chance of a photo or two showing the brake blocks you used and how you made them fit in the agc300 calipers?

    thanks,

    -Steve

  • Hey Steve,

I actually ended up sorting my pads out today. I ended up using some Madison Aztec Road System pads which fit the old bolts (which I believe are M5): https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/brake-blocks/aztec-road-system-standard-brake-blocks-charcoal/

Just had a test ride and they work pretty well, definitely 50%+ better than the old pads!

  • So the Aztec shoe/holder has the same stubby but as the original dis compe’s ? ,the shoe I took a photo of is I’am sure what I used to solve the issue and was an Aztec in all but having name on the shoe, well done that looks v smart, you must have 50% more rubber hitting the rims now ,what’s the frame ? looks nice with the Edco headset and flat crown

  • Yeah that's right, the thread matches the old pads. It's so so much better now! Frame is a Balk (rebadged Eddy Merckx Pista, but rather ratty and under the radar, which I quite like ) originally a "hire" bike from a track in Rotterdam (I believe). The EDCO headset was a bargain NOS from a Ripley jumble many moons ago; honestly the best threaded headset I've ever owned. I had to get the central spline of the brake modified so it would fit: It's now an eccentric spline that threads through the crown and then moves up so the caliper has enough drop to work.

  • I think I have some of these somewhere (original pads, that is). I will attempt to find them, though it sounds like the Aztecs are more effective.

If you’re a sucker for originality then let me know and I’ll try to find them!
