  • Reading this just after I ordered a 11-32. :(
    Will test it thoroughly before I set off to the Swiss alps with it, and also take the 11-28 with me.

    Don't actually know if I need it, maybe it's just a peace of mind thing...

  • Glad you said this, I just got a 11-28 for my DA9000 rear mech. Was thinking to push my luck, but glad I get a 11-30 now. Thanks Ed.

  • That was the backup plan, but if it works I might run with it.
    I already went up Furka , Grimsel and Nufenen on an 11-28, but never in this bad shape. :)

    I just need to know it's there if I should need it and just htfu.

  • No issues doesn’t mean it will work exactly as intended.

    All this base on whether the derailleur hanger is long enough to provide enough clearance for the upper jockey wheel to clear the biggest sprocket, at the same time be able to clear the 16t capacity.

  • Adding to this pile. I've got a 30 on a 9000 RD, definitely struggles.

  • You can use Wolftooth or do a cage swap on the DA or just swap the whole derailler for a GS cage Ultegra. I prefer Di2 Ultegra long cage RDs these days.

  • Fitted the 11-32 yesterday and turns fine in the workstand, cross chaining will be an issue but need to take it out to see if it really works as intended.

  • Did you lengthen the chain/put on a longer chain?

  • Switched from 52/36 11-28 to 50/34 11-32, the old chain worked but also switched to a new chain 1 link longer. I do like to keep complete drive trains separate.

    34/11-12 combo barely clears with the longer chain, but the longer chain looks more healthy on the 50/20-32 end, where I tend to be in before I shift down to the 34.

    All of this on a 2013 Supersix with stock hanger but B-screw all the way in.

  • If you're squeezing capacity out of a derailleur then size the chain properly (big/big not through mech to tightest possible join + pair of links) better to be floppy in the small/small combination you shouldn't use than explody in the big/big combination you shouldn't use.

  • One of the main thing I love about the recent Di2 system where it stop you from riding in the smallest sprocket when on the small chainring.

    Not fun explaining to customer why they should keep this setting on.

    Tbh, going for 50/34 already provide a big difference before changing cassette.

    No matter what cassette you have, you will always wish for that one extra sprocket when climbing on the mountain.

  • Looking into 1x11 for a new build and I've been reading up on GRX RX810. It looks good, but wanted to find out what people were running and to get some feedback before I buy.

    Also, I want to keep my current wheel set, a pair of XR31T's built onto Hope RS4 Centrelock disc hubs. Will I have any issues running something like 11-42 on those?

  • 11-42 should work on those wheels no problem, the shimano cassettes that size run with a spacer on the spoke side of the cassette. Sram ones which are splined will just go on as is.

  • If you want to run 1x there isn't a lot of choice. I run SRAM Apex 1 just because it came on the bike and still not fell apart and I hate the big swoop shifting action in Shimano. GRX 810 seems like a solid choice, but if you do lots of road miles 1x could feel limiting.

    There is. Just put a narrow wide chainring on, get the chain length right and you're good to go.

    Finding 39x28 a bit of a slog in the Surrey Hills...if I were to change the ring pair to 50/34 will the DA 9000 rear mech still work as intended?

  • Thanks for this. I’m slightly in two minds about the 1x, but leaning that way at the moment. I like the idea of keeping things simple and this bike won’t be used for long road miles.

  • 1x is stupid unless you have particular requirement for mud-shedding like in CX or you're looking for aero gains and running a large front ring.
