Carradice Saddlebags

Titanium Airy is 360g, Fly is 460g.

Ah but this is LFGSS 2020 where we're all convinced we're ultra super endurance adventurers who need abs-o-lute rock solid reliability for when we're shredding the gnar in deepest dorset, literally more than one mile from the nearest bike shop.

Above said, I'm a believer in the carradice + bagman system for the smaller bags. It's just when we start getting into the big lads (this super C i have is 23litres) that I'm beginning to question whether it's truly the best way to go.

Have been vaguely pondering how i'd put one together with minimal ti tubing!

I mean, I quite regularly go bikepacking in Europe, and while, yes, there's generally a bike shop somewhere, it might be a couple of hours' ride away, and I don't really want anything to fail to the extent that I can't ride the bike as that couple of hours' ride is probably too far to walk.

I've been using the SQR system, which lifts the bag enough to stop it touching the rear fender on my bikes, and generally doesn't sway too much. I do have to mount my rear dynamo light down on one of the stays so that it's still visible, though, and generally have another light on the bag itself.

Huh - SJS/Spa/etc. all have the lower weights. Wonder if this is a with/without fixings thing?

Not sure, but it’s odd that the manufacturer will list a higher weight than shops.

René Herse front rack is ~190g; I'd assume that you could get a custom support at that kind of weight.

You could use that too. Like this

Without cantis, use the version that goes to tabs on the fork/frame and have those brazed on to it. And then use the qr clamp with that.

I used my Barley again this week for a change instead of a modern drybag, I do like it.

I've patched some holes and covered the bottom with leather, as it wore through at where it meets the Bagman.

Has anyone SE London based got a classic saddlebag rack attached to a saddle using the saddlebag clamp which I could borrow for 10 minutes to check clearance / if it would work with my bike?

(I ride a 47cm frame and always struggle with luggage. Seems the classic rack lifts a bag quite high...?)

Which bit of SE London?

How have you bodged the light on the back of the Surly? Just a bit of a tube to push the light out? I just clip mine and and let it bounce about as an attention grabber and fit another static light further doen the seat stay.

Also, with the rear light chat, the short Fibre Flare is perfect to clip into the metal loops on the flap of a Carradice. Sits diagonally, but I don't see that as an issue.

Although it seems that you can't get fibre flares anymore. Shame.

Yeah it's just a bit of tube I had. Means when I lock it up on my commute the light comes away with the bag so there's one less thing to remove/forget to remove!
On my Nelson I have a couple of clip on lights with a spacer between them so they don't rattle and mount one on the seat stay also.

If useful, for me it wasn't the supports that actually broke - it was the main bagman bag holding bit itself that snapped as the aluminium wasn't strong enough. The support rods seemed fine.

@plasticniki I have one of those "classic" saddle bag mounts that hooks into the saddle using the two loops.

I also have a couple of saddle bags incl the Super C audux to plop to test with however I'm in E11!

I can measure the distance between on the Classic from the saddle attachment to the underside of the classic mount, would that help?

Lights with a clip like the Planet Bike Super Flash play very nicely with the metal logo plates on the newer Carradice bags - as long as the angle works for you.
