Snapped integral derailleur hanger. Sad times

Posted on
  • So, this happened to my gf's beautiful Harry Quinn. The dropout has snapped across where the bolt attaches.

Are there options other than having the dropout replaced, or is that the only sensible course?

Can anyone recommend someone in NE London who could do it?

Finally, am I right that any brazing is going to destroy a good few inches of chrome on the stays? New chrome is hella-pricey, right?

It's been a sad weekend here!

  • Could maybe have what’s left there smoothed off and a new hanger brazed on?

Would still likely lose some chrome though and yeah, my experience of looking for some quotes for getting a full frame chromed was that it’s just not financially viable.

  • I still have the missing part (it was more than half, so it clung on to the bolt). Perhaps it could be brazed back on and re-tapped.

But I'd worry about the strength and the same thing happening again, I'd guess.

We might have to go for a raw steel look on the stays, transitioning back to the chrome.

It's a shame though, because the detailing on the frame is incredible - never gonna find another one like it, esp in 51cm. Great colour, chromed stays, chromed lugs, gold lug lining, beautiful painted badges, and yet so tasteful. (Photo is pre-fitting/tuning, pls do not laugh at the saddle angle. The stem was non-negotiable, in spite of my attempts at negotiating!)

Super interested in recommendations for someone who might quote to re-unite the two pieces or replace the dropout.

  • I’d give something like this a go before dropping serious coin.

  • Winston Vaz would probably be the most cost effective proper repair.

  • A half decent brazed repair will be as strong as the patent metal if not stronger.

Winston Vaz does a fair bit of repairs I think so I would second that recommendation, no idea if he’s north east or what though.

There’s also Geoff Roberts, I’m sure he would make a very tidy job of repairing it and I don’t think his repair prices are as high as you might expect.

  • Or change to single speed or geared hub...

  • Thanks all, will definitely hit up Winston and see what's what.

Or change to single speed or geared hub...

She already has a single speed, this one was built specifically for the gears, and the rear is < 130mm, so I don't think a geared hub is gonna fit (or offer enough speeds)

  • Hangers on vertical dropouts are a pain, plus chrome is slippery and everything moves. Fab looking bike with over bb guides so my era. Needs a frame builder to advise on repair or new Dropout. Kevin Sayles from Woodrup is on Facebook and might help as it his era :)

  • I've had not one, not two but three similar problems over the last five years or so. Two dropouts that snapped through the line of the adjustment screw and a few weeks ago a derraileur attachment bolt that snapped off flush in the mech hanger.
All three caused - directly - by the mech hitting the spokes and getting pulled up into the wheel - and indirectly by my incompetence and stubborn refusal to let a professional set up my bike.

Winston Vaz as mentioned above repaired the latest one with a whole new drop out for £90. He did say if he could have done just the hanger it would have been £40. Super nice guy. He's in Hither Green, but only 15 mins by car from the Blackwall tunnel. Definitely recommended, though the mobile version of his website is awful and hides his phone number. Yes! Thanks, that's the tip I needed. So confused while looking for it last night.

  • There is a rule, surely, that the shitness of a framebuilder’s web presence is inversely proportional to the skills they have. Dave Yates’ site was 100% in comic sans for years.

  • Posibly another option is to find a general metal working place that can tig weld it up. The heat will be very localised and you will lose less chrome. The person I would use to do it would probably be £10-00 at the most and he would do it while I waited.

  • For a temp repair if you ratchet around an lbs spare mech hanger box, you might find one with a flat back, literally just bolt the wheel qr through it, friction will hold ut most of the time.
Did one on a cheapie bike yesterday, secured against rotation with a chainring bolt, but that means drilling another hole in the dropout.
Proper job would be to replace whole dropout, think they are still available but you'll loose the chrome.
Problem solver make a thing for it as well.
