  • Can this just be a thread for discussing hubs now?

What's the forums opinion on Surly hubs? Looking for a rear track and a front disc hub for a fixed commuter. They will be getting 120+ miles a week in all weather. I guess being Surly they're going to be pretty solid but anything else I should consider in the price range?

I am particularly attracted to the allen bolts and flanges without any cut outs.

Guess I should add I want silver too.

  • imho allen key bolts on hubs arenโ€™t great on fixed rear wheels for a number of reasons. Inconvenient as they are ... peanut butter spanners ftw.

They surly hubs are forged, so strong. Probably less prone to cracks than boutique hubs.

What reasons? I have two fixed gear bikes with allen key bolts on the hubs and haven't had any issues as of yet.

  • +1 for Surly Ultra New- no issues with the allen bolts whatsoever.

Also good to know that the Ultra New axle kits retrofit to the older solid axle version of the hub
