  • Amazing info!! Thank you!

  • Not sure how some new account happened. I don't post that much. It was a genuine offer of help though.

  • Ah! Not @vince?

Thank you! Appreciate it. I will need to get the wheels out storage. And figure how I get to Teddington without breaking rules. I don't have any bags that can carry 2 wheels.

Let me have a think. I'm in putney.

  • @ChainBreaker i have spare Double Square nipples and a bunch of spare spokes of different lengths (albeit not aero). Based in Putney :)

  • If it's the spoke that's broke you can probably just swap it dead easily using the same nipple without having to remove the tyre or anything, fingers crossed your nipples aren't seized or don't fall into your rim.

  • Is this a front spoke? I have one or two original spokes for that somewhere. Probably nipples too, but you'll have to pay the postage

  • Hi all

@turkish that's wonderful.Trying to decide. If you're in putney, that makes it much easier!

@snottyotter, it's been a decade. The nipple is definitely no longer in its place. May have even fallen out. But a clever thought.

@Netakure, wonderful!! I'd be more than happy to pay for postage. I just need to get it from storage and I will let you know!

You guys rock. I'll get back shortly.

  • @snottyotter yup... I just said my nipple is no longer in place. Snicker.

  • I've had 20/24 XR31's and 20/28 XR22's. For a fast lightweight road wheelset I'd probably go for 22's again but for an all rounder wheelset the 31's were incredible (I did plenty of touring on them). Either will be great if built right.

  • Light, wide, box section/low profile (less than XR22) rim brake options in 24/28 drilling? Needs a coated track or disc option for the rear (fixed road wheelset).

I like TB14's but they don't exactly tick the lightweight box.

  • Light, wide, box section/low profile

    Pick 2...

  • thanks jono. Alternatively anyone know if the XR26T is stiff enough for a 20/24 build? I already have some 20/24 hubs from an old build. (78kg rider)

  • Yeah, looks that way. Anything other than XR22's or DCR flirt worth checking out around the 20mm mark?

  • DT Swiss R460? It's a bit cheaper than the XR22, although not as good in my view.

Or there's the Ryde/Rigida Pulse Sprint, but that's expensive, rather narrow and very difficult to source.

  • I'm ready to build a new wheelset for my Velo Orange Piolet, but I'm struggling to decide between 27.5+ or 29" rims.

The frame is optimized for either 29 x 2.3 or 27.5 x 2.8 tyres. Currently running 29ers but I would like to try 27.5 for the first time for that extra volume, especially to take it off road.

Only thing is I do ride it in town a lot and I might be wrong (?) but I don't see many fast all-road/gravel tyre options in 27.5 x 2.8. I think going smaller would drop the BB and change the ride quality. Would this be noticeable? Do these tyres actually exist? Or is 27.5+ strictly an mtb domain? I'd also like to try tubeless to drop some more weight.

I'll need to fit mudguards for winter commuting duties and I have no idea which would be better for clearance / compatibility. I would have to go smaller than 2.3" to fit guards on the current 29er wheels, so I guess I'd be dropping the BB on either size anyway.

Was hoping someone with more experience with this could help out. I'm confused :/

  • Maybe it's because 2.8 tires will suck in anything but singletrack

  • The problem with shallower box section rims in lower drilling is the wheel lacks the radial and lateral stiffness.

The xr 26 rim is fine in 20f/24r with a good triplet hub. I have one in production and the test wheels have been great. I would be wary of this rim in this drilling with a normal hub for all riders. It depends on what failure rate you find acceptable.

  • Decent 26" XC rim? Can't seem to find much available.

Stans Crest are pricey at £70 each

Or these DT X430 at £50 each on ebay

  • So, just to clarify info gleaned from this thread: interlacing is not strictly necessary, especially for smaller (406) wheels?

  • Has anyone measured/built a Sputnik rim recently? Ryde lists the ERD as 600, SJS lists it as 602, but in the Q&A one of their employees says it's 607 (Same as Spa Cycles). https://leonard.io/edd/ has it listed as both 600 and 606 (I assume the CSS has the same dimensions as the regular version).

  • Measure yourself, always

  • @damitamit

I have a good used spare set of Mavic EX729 Disc if you want?

  • Any opinions on my interlacing question up page? @gbj_tester? @cycleclinic?

  • I build my rear Brompton wheel (PowerTap track hub, A23 349 rim, 2mm Sapim Strong spokes) without interlacing and it's been fine. Interlacing would have resulted in some very sharp bends and odd angles.

  • Any opinions on my interlacing question

    Yes, I've already given mine.
