  • Looks good, but we need to see the paint on your chainstays after you've run it through some mud this winter before we pronounce final judgement.

  • They are WTB 47 Venture. So far very pleased with how things are working, but I ussually avoid mud, compared to Technics100.

Do you have a picture with the clearance of 700x40 please?

  • Comparing the pictures to me it seems clearance are looking the same for both models or at most marginally similar.

  • Sorry, I keep going to where my bikes are and forgetting to get a photo! Will do at some point.
Pretty generous clearances at all the important areas with 700x40. I'm not sure how these (On One Gravelroads) stack up against other 40s though.

47mm seems to be the consensus for 650b in CDFs. I'd be interested to see how 47mm WTB Senderos looked in the frame.

  • Nice - good info. I'm basically after something as knobbly as I can get. I realise it's probably not the frame for this but im just wondering if getting rid of the mtb is viable

  • Not a problem, although it's generally wet in Northern Ireland anyway!!!!

  • Sendero are the knobblier ones, right? I looked at those, too. For 2 reasons I disregard them:

    1. My rides are mixed and prefer a bit of smothness for the tarmac part. With Senderos I was a bit concerned about the extra drag as I am not a strong pedaler and any drag on flat roads kind of annoys me.

    2. Read a review about its real size and was saying that while in general is around 47 at the side knobbs are going somewhere between 48-49mm. And if you chainstay spacinf is similar to my sketch than the risk of rubb, I imagine, is semnificative.

When I chose the Venture I considered that would give a good balance for my need. Already discovered compared to 700cx35 on some areas, on climbing rocky places, it behaves way better. I have to test it against some rougher wet downhills where I had to get off the bike with the 700c. The downhills are nothing spectacular, just larger looser rocks kind of the size of a fist.

I am still at the beginning with the offroad things and on youtube seen some guys doing some pretty intense things with the gravel bike on MTB trails. I know so far that I still have to accustome my self with going downhill on the hoods. I feel a lot of pressure on my palms. Have inline breaks, but for heavier stuff the decrease in levearage length makes it impractical to control the bike. Must look at one point for some 50+ drops(if they exist) and decrease the stem length.

As for you trying the Sendero you can do what I did. :)). I took a plundge after 3 month of research and going back and forth about the 650bx47 wheels.

  • I get into a lot of sticky mud which tends to overload file treads so I think I'll try the 650x42 resolutes this winter. Need the clearance, probably, and my bike is from 2015 so probs has less space than some of them. Would rather have the smaller tyre with fatter knobs than a fatter tyres with less knob, if you get me. Will report somewhere when I get round to trying it.

  • I’ve definitely found myself wanting a bit more knobble sometimes. My ride the other night had me spinning like a paddle steamer through slippery mud with nowhere to put a foot down, thinking I was very much at the limits of my current tyres. Was pretty jealous of my mate with his knobbly 650x2.1 tyres!

  • 700x40 clearance. Sorry, not the best pic but you get the idea.

Looking at that, I’ve still got bags of room in there. Theses might be fairly svelte 40s (I’ll get the callipers out), but I’d be interested to try something bigger at 700

  • Is very good. A lot a clearance left. I guess a 42 will easily go there and still get 3-4 mm clearance on each side. Ty!

  • After some advice please genesis people! Questions will make me sound like an idiot but hopefully someone will have some ideas and saves me making a fool out of my self on the answer question answered thread.
I am £700 ish into this bike from a recent service and purchasing it off of ebay. It is/will be used for a short 5-7 mile each way all year round commute and any road riding. Love the bike.

    1. LBS when it was in for a service recommended going for tiagra 10 speed at the back (derailleur and mech) for more range. I am moving to a hilly part of the UK and hope to tour on it so that sounds like a good idea. Will the 105 mech (think it is short/medium cage but have no idea) not work with a bigger cassette?
    2. Seatpost has a very small bit of grease in to prevent seizing but has slipped and scuffed itself. Never known this happen on a bike of mine before. Could it be the clamp? Shit post? No idea.
    3. Wheel wise, I'd like to run say 700x35 and keep the bike as my one drop bar bike for commuting, longer sunday rides and eventual tours. Would there be any forum recommendations? My mate recently got some hope pro4 20five discs which he is raving about. LBS stocks hunt.

    Cheers

  • I like that. Very functional.

  • @t-v cheers. Was editing the post on my laptop with some questions! Did 70+ km in the peaks at the weekend on gravel and it was ace

  • Beautiful country.

  • Any time I ride my day one 20, outwith family cycles where we trundle along with panniers/a kid on the back, I think I hate it. I've been commuting in and it feels so slow and heavy and I am beginning to detest the nexus 8 hub. Family spins are great as the low pressure, wide tyres mean the usual comfort and bumped kerbs, mild gravel and all that, but anything else and I constantly curse it under my breath.

Not sure how any cycling magazine can claim (as one review did) that it would pass as a proper road bike.

  • daily whip earned some upgrades:

also the fancy twin now with hydro and 1x

  • Just picked up this. Going to get drop bars. Probably fixed. Tubeless. For CX and road.

  • excellent condition, awful build, these are a bit long and low FYI

  • Re. seatpost slipping (aside from obvious answer that you might not have tightened it up enough) I’ve had problems in the past with seatpost clamps on thin walled steel frames where the “lip” of the clamp that stops it slipping down the seat tube is too thick compared to the diameter of the tubing and prevents it from clamping the seat tube.

For instance I found a brand-x one would always slip but tester approved BBB bsp-85 hasn’t budged.

  • Yes it’s mint. Don’t think it’s been used much , previous owner died RIP.
Long and low is good for me.

  • @jupiz cheers will get one and a new post ordered

  • I got a Longitude for my partner during the lockdown, but I must confess I am also using it, more than my Gorilla Monsoon

  • That looks great - similar to my Inbred. Though I am trying to reduce the number of bikes and combine my inbred and Croix de fer.

On that note...I have a 2015 725 CdF (the one with the carbon fork). I think its 398 mm a-c and 45 mm offset.

The only fork I can find that meets my needs is a replacement fork for the Light Blue Darwin, but its 400 mm a-c and 50 mm offset.

Anyone have any thoughts on how much this will impact handling (I will be sticking a front rack on, loaded for camping)?

  • 2mm increase on the a-c will slacken it off by 0.1 of a degree.

The trail will lower by 5mm which is maybe better for a front load.

I doubt you will really be able to tell a difference and if you did, you will have forgotten after 2 miles.
