Advice: bike for Sheffield?

Posted on
  • Moving to Sheffield for uni in September and wondering if anyone can give some insight into which of my 3 steeds might be best for the city.

    Any input appreciated 🤟

  • Bike no. 1: my pride n joy Steamroller: 49:20 fixed ratio, wide tyres and risers.
Great for London, but worried about the hills of sheff...

  • Bike no.2: Btwin road. 25mm tyres, triple crankset and 9spd sora- nothing special but a decent ride.

Might be better for escapes to the peaks?

  • Aaand no. 3: beater trek- inherited from my dad, so some sentimental value, again nothing special but that’s kinda the idea- good town beater but capable off road.
Botched 1x 9spd deore, 26” wheels and narrowish risers.

Perhaps the most versatile, but also pretty small so not the most comfortable...

  • Tramlines and hills

  • You'll need the triple.

  • Shiit Yh forgot about the trams!

  • That’s the one then I guess

  • Ha, yes - bring whatever has the easiest gears.

Depending where you're going/living you can live a fairly tram free existence if you're lucky.

  • Loads of great riding just out of the city on or off road. If I had one bike it'd be a gravel bike with a full plethora of gears.

  • The more gears the better. I bought a fixed gear when I lived in Sheffield and regretted it almost immediately. Everything is uphill
There's some unreal roads in the peaks that you can enjoy with gears.

  • Everything is uphill

This. Son lives in Kelham Island. Everywhere from there is seriously up. Even popping to the chippy.

  • 100% take something that you can ride off road. Fantastic mountain biking there.

    I'd prob take 2 and 3...

  • Cheers guys!

Probably gonna do up the roadie then, and maybe take the mtb up later in the year to hit some trails.

I guess the surly’a staying home for now 😢

  • Everyone in this thread has gone soft. Take the Surly like a legend.

  • Yep, take the steamroller and a big dose of htfu

  • Tempted. Don’t think i could handle the descents with a loaded backpack though

  • If you're just taking 1 bike, take the road bike so you can get out and enjoy the peak district!

  • hope you know there are a few good routes on the forum too. Like The Seldom Killer's here, really nice one and starts in Sheffield.
