Primus / Stove Appreciation

  • Anecdotal evidence, but I've found the primus omnifuel harder wearing, lower maintenance and cleaner burning when compared to the whisperlite universal.

  • Thanks, looks like a good alternative. I can get a bit of a deal on MSR but the metal fuel pump, simmer control and no need to change components/jets when switching fuels on the Primus make it a tempting option.

  • I've got that GSI pot (bought on its own without stove, but including spoon/cosy/lid/silicone gripper). It's a nice little pot, not felt the need to swap to a ti one, plenty light enough. Pot fits a 100g cannister and small stove as well as spoon/lighter. The little silicone gripper is great, the spoon was crap. Whole thing was fairly cheap too.

  • This is what I ended up with. Cheap pot stand and windshield off eBay to go with mug and old trangia burner.
Obvs the flames lick up the side so you burn your hand on the handle but it weighs naff all compared to the full trangia. Think stand, big mug and shield came in at well under £20 so there’s that too. Def good enough for solo trips.

  • Slightly off topic here but what do people use to carry their fuel around? I've got an original Trangia so won't need a huge fuel bottle and planning to use methylated spirit.

  • I carry meths in a sigg bottle. Have done so for years, never failed!

  • Msr metal fuel bottle for my meths(same as sigg).
I use one of these jobbies and mount it by the bb. It’s been pranged into rocks and dropped more than a few times and no issues so far..
It just lives in the cage and pops on and off as required, so far the quick release has been perfectly secure and never fallen off or anything.

  • I just use a Trangia fuel bottle (I've got a 500ml one, which is fine for a week or more); the cap/spout arrangement means there's less chance for me to spill meths all over fingers/pans...

  • Thanks all! Will get on with ordering one.

  • Glad to hear it's rated. On my n+1 list...

  • also on my n+1 is the pot stand...

  • I've never heard of this bikebuddy thing, would you use it for water bottles?

  • No reason you couldn’t use it for bottles. It’s primary function is for carrying outsize stuff like thermos or nalgene bottles. I think they’ve existed for years in the touring world. No reason to use it on regular bike bottles tho.

  • n+1'd with an MSR Pocket Rocket 2, indoor boil test = very impressed.

  • Not really stove appreciation, but it works well enough...
Tried out the new gas stove last night and this morning. Well impressed for £13.59 + gas. Folded bacofoil wind break £almost free.

Its a bit bulkier and heavier than one which goes atop the gas canister (although there's probably not much in it if you had a stand for the canister). The lower height and fairly wide legs gave a good base and the pot supports work well with 750ml cup or a frying pan.

Piezo ignition works well, but some care is required to save catching it when folding the legs. It can roar on full, and adjusts well, down to holding onto a tiny flame which was good for keeping a cup of water hot to heat through a bagged meal.

It has no soul, but it may get more use than my Trangia now.

  • I've got the vango version of this (sans piezo) and love it. Definitely not ultralight but heat modulation is really good. Have just ordered a butane adapter so can use the cheaper cans.

Funny that you mention trangia - i've actually been considering getting a gas one despite have the above, though mainly for car camping + when i know wind is going to be an ongoing issue.

  • Mentioning the Trangia, prompted an idea to see if the burner fitted.

Kind of... With the lower legs folded up and the pot supports half out. It works well with trangia pots.
Maybe a bit too well as the pot supports were glowing brightly. You could probably melt the aluminium if it was on full for a while.

  • If I ever manage to test my camping kit bought over the last year or two, I’ll have to actually try the stoves I bought. Got the PX gas jetboil copy, the two different mini ethanol stoves, even emergency solid fuel type. Tempted to source a petrol stove to make everything a little more seamless with the motorbike; would prefer quickest/strongest heat with minimum extra stuff.

  • A ton?!

I'm definitely all about a Pocket Rocket in a Ti mug

  • I'm definitely all about a Pocket Rocket in a Ti mug

That's what I'd settled on last year as a good balance of weight & function.

Just took delivery of a Ti Pocket Stove & trivet.

It will burn twigs, esbit/ hexamine, and hold a variety meths stoves & trangia burner too. Trivet alone will sit on trangia burner as another light option.

Just tested with my 6g barebones meths stove, makes a nice (but pricey) housing for that although the price gives all the above versatility too. The shelf was on low in the picture, it'll work better on high & without trivet with this stove I think. It worked well anyway.

I'm going to test in the local wild later in the week all being well. Real test will be how it copes in strong winds. 56g + pot might not stay put very well in a gale...

The shop rates this one highly based on the note in with it!

  • I just got an Optimus Polaris, it's going to be a while until I can test it out but from the videos I've watched it sounds very loud.

Does anyone have any experience with mutifuel stove silencers? Any thoughts on which to go for?

  • My thinking (for my similar kit) is use a few twigs (or pegs) as diagonal structural support posts on the outside. Then it can’t easily topple.

  • Good tip, ta!
