  • is it better to use a 105 long cage derailleur or a can use some shimano mtb system?

MTB is probably going to be cheaper, the flat-bar road shifters are expensive, partly because they just are and partly because it's not easy to get right hand one without also being stuck with the left hand one.

  • The frame is some kind of Enduro IIRC. SX Trail?

  • a rather large trailer

Is there a build thread for this?

Not yet, but there will be once I've finished it, with a cost breakdown. Should end up about 2/3rd the cost of a comparable trailer imported from the EU, not accounting for my time. (Especially since if I was paying for my time, it would have been cheaper for me to buy a desktop mill rather than faffing around with sawing, filing and dremeling the axle mounts).

  • Thanks for the info! I know nothing of MTB can you tell me which derailleur is suitable for the kind of gear i want to use?

Hmmm, Shimano seem to have abandoned making MTB RDs for men, looks like you're going to have to suck up the price of the road levers if you want 11-speed and a 34T low. There's a Metrea (SL-U5000) lever which is readily available as RH only for about half the price of a pair of SL-RS700 which will work with the RD-R7000-GS RD or RD-RX800-GS if you think a clutch is a worthwhile thing, those seem to be the two 11-speed RDs optimised for a 34T low without going up to Ultegra or DA

  • 👋 me!

  • Shimano seem to have abandoned making MTB RDs for men,

    Sexist shite. Fuck right off.

  • Thanks and @grams and @Lolo

I found a couple of 118 link versions off ebay for 18ish. I'll send the missus the Decathlon link.

  • I mean, yeah I still have 10spd bikes.

  • Really? We can't chuckle at "massive cock" jokes now? Damn, I missed that memo.

  • If you are buying online watch the delivery date, I ordered a bottom bracket paid £2.99 for postage and the delivery date was 15 days away.

Cancelled and picked up from Croydon yesterday

  • Chains are out of stock at Decath anyway so I won't be ordering from there.

  • 'Respect the cock' context: originally delivered by Tom Cruise as an odious pickup artist/motivational speaker in the film Magnolia.

  • Does stack in someway negate a longer reach?
I've found a deal on a bike I'm after, but the sizing is slightly longer than my current bike.

New bike has 3mm more reach, 20mm more stack, and an 11mm longer effective top tube.

If anyone's moved to a bike with a taller stack but slightly longer reach, did you find it massively different in terms of fit?

  • How much spacer did you have on the old bike?

  • As has been pointed out, 11sp flat bar shifters are stupidly expensive, which is why when I put this together a year ago I just stuck with 10sp and used a Tiagra shifter and an Ultegra 6700 rear mech. 40t chainring and 11-30 cassette does me ok on a bike that weighs a shade over 7kg

  • Cool. Really looking forward to it.

  • It's a daft question. But. I'll ask it.
    Anodizing/Anodising.
What do I need to think about if I wanted to do a frame?

Cleaning all traces of paint. Masking the BB threads and headset bores. Tank size. Jigging.

Metro Plating in Uxbridge have the capacity in clear or black, you'd have to ask them about other colours, and are #tester_approved

  • Excellent. Thanks. I'll get in touch with them.
I suppose the follow on question is: is there a recommended bead blaster (too harsh?) still in SE London way? As I think that'll be the best way to get rid of all paint ( alu frame).
