If you insist on using weird foot placement, you're going to have to customise something on either your shoes or the pedals. Roll support is not essential on SPD, the road ones didn't have it and I guess you don't need it since the Speedplay looks unlikely to provide much.

Well, let's qualify it then. Any suggestions for better clipless pedals?
Double-sided is nice but SPD and other MTB pedals don't work due to the requirement for side pods to stabilise the system. Speedpray's MTB system looked promising but they appear to have abandoned it.
