I'm not really into cars these days (i do like nicely machined metal though) but that was an enjoyable read. Will be interested to hear the final engine figures when it's been on the dyno.

Have you seen this?
Porsche has recently released the PCCM Plus, which would be a lovely addition to your car.
https://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/classic/genuineparts/producthighlights/pccm/
RRP is £1,500, fitting around £650 if you choose to get a rear view camera.

That would work if I still had the lower centre console, but I removed it to get a bit more legroom:

What head unit did you go with in the end or is it still the stock one?
-
• #81
It's nice to see this hasn't been sullied with a personalised plate.
-
• #82
You could still fit the PCCM (non plus) version.
-
• #83
They are wildly expensive though... Blaupunkt Bremen and the Continental one I put in my R53 are both very tasteful and far more affordable. The Continental one is actually available with a Porsche decal overlay too so it fits in very nicely.

YES Neil! What took you so long for to do this thread! Lunch read sorted!

a nerdy money pit... my kind of thread !

The recent Blaupunkt Bremen:
However, jury is out at the moment - I find the menu structure to be impenetrable.

True, and I might still do this - however, it's only got pre-amplified outputs, so I'd need to convert those to line-out, and I don't think that would do the audio many favours.

What happened to 1,2,3,5 and 6?
The Bremen is very lovely and period correct looking in fairness but even at the bargaineous price (in comparison to the PCCM offering anyway) it's quite expensive for something so basic.
I'm actually surprised how popular the Continental one is among 996 owners though. Like a big dummy I mistakenly ordered a 24v model rather than a 12v model so I can't report on user friendliness until later in the week/ next week when the correct one arrives but I'll let you know how it is.
with cd...
without cd...It looks nice though!

I actually bought the Continental with the CD, but never installed it (I gave it away in the end), as it only has amplified/speaker outputs, and my amp wanted line-out/un-amplified.

If you loose patience with the Bremen I could be interested for my Saab.
Cool sleeper project, bar the subtle lowering and larger alloys is the plan to keep the exterior as factory looking as possible?
-
• #92
Yes, the only thing that should give the game away (other than the BBS LM alloys) is the 355mm brake discs and larger callipers.

Wow.. love 996's, what an awesome thread Chapeau

I love this thread. Cars will always be a side-issue with me although she who will become Mrs Desert Polar Bear has a bug eye Impreza that I'm quite partial too.
I've just dropped my Beemer engine and gearbox off (two cylinder air cooled boxer bike engine) for some major rest0 and modification work. It's going to be north of 5K which is stupidly more than the bike is worth, and then I've got to ship it across the Atlantic.
Sometimes there is no logic only love and lust, and that is no bad thing.
Looking forward to more updates.

Thread please. That sounds great!

Great project! One of my favourite porsche details are the door handle loops on the RS models. Afaik it’s possibly to convert the OG door handles to loops but I’m not sure whether it’s possible on all models. Needless to say it’s a matter of taste but I think it’d go well with the new steering wheel and the LM wheels.

Auto Audio called me- all done, collection tomorrow. Slightly unclear what the invoice amount is going to be currently.

Especially if you've been adding little tasks here and there...
Then when you turn up, you think it is slightly more than what you anticipated but hey...
and then you realise the VAT needs to be added! -

We agreed the seat at £1,300, but I know they have done a huge amount more work than that covered. I’m assuming they’ll stick to the quoted price for that, unsure what they’re going to charge for the stereo work.

Sadly not going to happen. I'm isolating in Brighton, the engine and gearbox are in Faversham. Likely the next time I see them (two=three months), they'll be all back together and shiny and crisp...
I will take photos as I (slowly) rebuild the rolling chassis though.
I think this is nuts. And brilliant. And proper nerdy. In good ways.
