  • That's Benny's favourite position to relax in.

He's been coming along well in spite of lockdown, he (I) finally was ready for him to go off lead at the park and now he can run with the other dogs he's socialised himself well and he gets more exercise so he's less energetic during the day.

he's moved up onto his adult food and now he has poos an owner can be proud of. pick up whole no trace left behind, textbook colour. after so long picking up runny orange shit it's so great to not have to worry where he might do his business now.

only issue is he likes to bark at the dogs he can hear outside the flat and any animal he sees on telly so he can be quite noisy. he also has a mad hour about 6.-7 after his dinner at 5pm where he just pants excessively and gets in a hyper state where he tires to hump, jump up and just generally be a pain in the arse regardless of if you pay him attention or not.

but for 10 months old I think he's doing amazing tbh. no real worries other than at some point a grumpy git will complain about the noise to the housing assoc. but the neighbours insist you cant hear him and we do nice stuff for them to keep them sweet just in case anyways.

  • So sweet, looking not unlike a Womble. :)

  • After a few years of regular dog-sitting it looks like we'll be getting our own pup once all this madness is over... OH is super keen on a big dog, I've told her to fuck off... Small, hypoallergenic doggo it is, we've only got a small house... Italian Greyhound or a Pinscher, I think I'd prefer a Pinscher...

  • Mate - you surely have only one choice in your manor?

  • I love them and so does my OH but they need a lot of exercise, that wouldn't be fair on the pooch... A smaller dog will be a bit more manageable for us... There are lots of large or working breeds locked up in small gardens and never getting exercised down here, makes me fucking sick...

  • Sounds like you guys have dog life nailed.

  • Just reminded me of Dog from the Footrot Flats comic strips, which I loved as a kid when we lived in Queensland for a bit but doesn't hold up very well in these more enlightened times.

Also of a guy called Max we knew who drove a big ute, had a cattle dog and lived in a ramshackle house up on a little clifftop overlooking a national park the road to which was impassable without a truck winch if it had rained recently. he was basically rural Australia distilled down into one person.

  • Yeah they do need exercise, especially if you plan to leave them home. He comes almost everywhere with me and that makes a huge difference. After 5 they calm down quite a lot. Awesome doggies, I’m a bit obsessed with them.

  • Just had to put my boy down this morning due to very aggressive cancer, feelings pretty shit right now.

  • So sorry to hear that. He looks so handsome. Staffies have the most loving eyes of all breeds in my opinion.

May he have an eternal pile of bones up there.

  • Truly sorry to hear that. From the photo he looks like a dog who lived a good comfortable life. I'm sure you did right by him and he got the most out of every moment he had in this world because of it.

  • Cheers lads, he was a good dog. He had a hard life early on (rescue) so he made up for it by taking it easy for the rest. I’m not sure if I should describe him as chill or lazy.

  • Wears my clothes better than I do.

  • Why did you shave his left leg?

  • prepping for his fuck taxis tattoo.

  • It's amazing how timid large dogs often are, and how much the little ones sometimes bully them around, until the large one bites. Poor thing, even backing off under the street sign. :)

  • Both my bloody great labradors are fully aware that my two miniscule cockers are bigger and tougher than them.

  • So sorry to read this. Well done for taking the brave decision.

  • You don’t need to be Dr Dolittle to realise someone’s got the hump.

  • Few things are sweeter than a shaggy dog looking out of a cyclist's backpack and putting its nose into the wind, looking like a daring explorer. Made me laugh inside just now. /csdsb

  • Contemplating a BuddyRider, don't suppose anyone's got one for sale?

  • Getting a cat talk has recently turned to getting a dog talk.

I grew up with rescue dogs and we've always wanted a rescue Staffie but as we both working full time jobs in London it's always seemed far reached/irresponsible. However since the start of the new world order we've been looking at ways of making it work and my partner has just confirmed a minimum of 2 days a week WFH. I now need to have the same chat with my work but I'll be pushing for a guaranteed 2 days WFH as well. This could mean we would now cover 80% of the time we didn't previously have at home.

I've just turned 40 and with kids not being on the near horizon we both feel like we could really do with something to focus us and get us out the house more. We own a house with a smallish garden and we have a really nice park at the end of the road. I'm also not too far from Crystal Palace and Beckenham place park for the weekends. The last few years we've really reduced our air travel and we also really like the idea of holidaying in the UK with a dog. We have friends with a holiday home in Cornwall which is very dog friendly.

    So far I have this list of questions to answer;

How many days are we guaranteed to be at home during the week?
Can we afford the insurance, food, care, dog training bills? (currently yes, trying to figure out what would happen if one of us lost our jobs)
Is a Staffie the right dog for us?
Where would the best place for me to adopt a Staffie or other dog from (Battersea?)
Are there dog train classes in the Sydenham area?

I know what it is to get up early in the middle of the winter in the pissing rain to walk a dog and that's not something I'm worried about. What else do I need to be thinking about? The big one in the back of my head is what's going to happen when we get neck deep into the recession and how secure are our jobs. But I'd really like to make a go of this without too much over thinking, I just want to be sure we can give a dog a good home.

    Any advice muchos appreciated.
