That is one of the things that can happen too. But first to see if the water is circulating.
Can you reach the front of the radiator to see if there are any noted cold spots.

I'll check that too. Tipping it down ATM so don't really want to go check just yet! O for a garage to work on the car in.

Had another look at the last invoice from Dodgy Mechanic No.1 and he mentions that the coolant fan isn't working, so that is definitely a good place to start. Also that guage was in the red but no overheating warning light was coming on. What would possibly cause that? Could the two be linked?

Ah ok. Worth a look then. I cannot clearly remember but I’d guess if you squeeze the hoses you may feel a weakness. It was on a large hose - maybe an inch or more diameter.
