its the only language I understand, I am asking for more translations in 'bike'.

At this point I decided to drop my girlfriend off for Paris-Brest-Paris, and then drive the rest of the way down to Morzine. I thought this would be a good test of the comfort my new seat provided.

I had thought about taking my own bike with me:
But ended up hiring a Santa Cruz Megatower from a local place in Morzine.

This is good craic. I might also document my far less lofty overhaul of my R53.

After I got back I took part in a magazine feature on the 996, the chap judging the ride/handling balance decided it was his favourite, which was nice.

I organised for these second hand BBS LM's to be delivered to BG Developments, along with some front and rear uprights so that they could start work on my new brakes:
I also placed an order for a new set of BBS LM's, which I'm still waiting for - they are meant to arrive at the end of July, and I'll be fitting them mid-August.
The brakes are fully floating rotors on alloy bells, with six piston AP racing callipers at the front and four piston AP racing callipers at the back:

I've got quite out of order in the timing of things tbh, as I also had the car painted and the roof replaced:

That's pretty much up to date now, we're finalising piston crown design which will then enable connecting rod lengths to be decided, then the engines should be run up on the Dyno, I'd love to think that we'd be fitting the engine this year but I think it'll be 2021 now.
Brakes and wheels will go on in August, and that (apart from the stereo, I'd forgotten about all that) is that.

Stereo - there were two options for this era of 996, one that had no name (basic? default?) and the "hifi" option that mine had. The standard version had mids and tweeters in the dash and next to the rear seats, the hifi option added an amp and a woofer in each door. There was a CD player in the luggage compartment, nestled against the bulkhead behind which the battery resided.
I listen to the radio a lot, and there was something which interfered with the radio signal. This wasn't on.
I had the antenna amplifier replaced, then the head unit, then I replace the amplifier and all the speakers, then I replace the head unit again - none of this fixed the interference problem, but I did have an extremely good stereo by this point. Oh, and I'd added a subwoofer.
I've not yet got the car back, but the place that has it at the moment say that they've resolved the interference problem by grounding the stereo to a unique ground point on the chassis, rather than it (as stock) sharing an earth point with the rest of the dash. We shall see, but hopefully it'll now be the stereo I've always wanted it to be.
I've got Morel separates in the dash, silk-coned mids and tweeters, a Focal powered sub under the dash on the passenger side, two Hertz woofers in the doors and two Hertz combination mid/tweeter units in the back. However, I now have only a four channel Morel amp, so the rears are unpowered (my old, six channel D-class amp was considered to be a possible source of interference).
If the new setup is what I want it to be I'll likely delete the rear speakers, change the woofers to Morel so everything matches, and call it good.
One other reason to delete the rear speakers is that I'm planning on removing the rear seats completely and turning that area into a luggage compartment.

Well that escalated a bit! Looking forward to seeing that engine on the dyno.
-
• #38
We need to run the engine on the dyno to work out what the new gear ratios should be, so it's a big moment (for all sorts of reasons).

Most people have a good understanding of the history of the 996
Lol

Will it still be road legal once modified and meet emissions etc?

Lol
Fair point, I copied that post from a Porsche Forum, where it might be slightly more accurate.

Yep, it's got cats and so on.

What is your budget for this?

Reckon you need a thread for yours as well. Pretty please!

It would have been cheaper buying a GT3, but they never made an open version of that. Also, I'd have been unable to resist modifying that, so I think this was a better starting point.
-
• #48
Yeah, but it wouldn't have allowed you to make a whole thread about it would it?
-

Nice work! Had an SC and a 3.2 back in the day, but found body repairs to combat tin worm ruinously expensive.

This thread is still only a sketch of what I've done with the car tbh.
Remember the Recaro? This is the seat cover that was discarded as not being good enough, I've not yet seen v2:
They cut this down too much (it's the lower heating element from an OEM Porsche heated seat):
And had to buy a new one from Porsche West London (they're not big fans of this project right now).
I explained this to @amey as being like getting new frame moulds made because you like the geo of your Trek Emonda, but felt the carbon layup could be improved upon. And then deciding to change BB, brake mount and headset standards along the way.
