Lightweight tent recommendations?

  • Got an Aldi knock-off. One of the elastic cords had pinged off its plastic stopper, and the stuff bag was missing, so I grabbed this from the scrap store before it got scrapped. I’d actually already taken some poles from a couple a year ago and not clocked what it was til @HatBeard suggested the real deal.

Took all of 2 minutes to feed the elastic back through and into the stopper plug.

Weight won’t be a problem for motorbike, but might be on the bicycle. I could make a new chair bit more lightweight material and just use the frame, but it’s unlikely this gets loaded on an ultra-ultra-lightweight trip anywag.

  • if weight is not an issue then the knock-offs are fine. i got a 15 quid one for my gf as we will only ever be car camping if we're together as she's got a fucked up back.

  • I tried the Sea to Summit version of this last weekend.
Absolutely excellent, highly recommended if you're going to sit around in camp a lot.

  • £35 for a couple bits of webbing on a sheet of ripstop? Fuck me I gotta start making again.

  • Yeah the concept is great, less the price! I've got a couple pals here sewing a lot and was hoping to enlist one for this.
Tyvm @platypus - sitting around is exactly what I like doing

  • I've wondered about those before, but been slightly discouraged by my mat (Exped synmat) having longitudinal ribs rather than transverse. Any thoughts?

  • Be fine I reckon, might take a bit of practice to make sure each of the 3 sections has the right amount of air in it before you do the fold?

  • Aye, mebbe not inflate it fully to allow for folding... Ta.

  • What is the current forum-approved 3 man tent? I am looking for something for me plus two medium-sized nippers. It is unlikely to face any serious conditions but I would like it to be light and compact (and cheap)

  • I picked up a Big Agnes Tumble 3 a while ago which has been great for trips with mrs pablo, but wouldnt wanna put a third person in especially. Weight is good though, we've split it across two bikes happily.

  • 3mx3m silnylon tarp and groundsheet is heaven for 3 people. Can be had for £50 all in and weighs almost nothing.

  • Anyone interested in a Naturehike cloud up 2? It's grey (lighter weight version), little used, includes a footprint so you can pitch it without the inner / in the rain / without the outter as just a bug net. Decent lightweight spacious one man. It isn't the newer "upgraded" one which has some side guys, but i never had an issue. Perhaps therefore not best suited to mega windy conditions.

    It's this one - https://www.trailspace.com/gear/naturehike/cloud-up-2/

Less than 1300g all in, I think.

£50? collected from Kingston or can possibly meet more central. Happy to post too.

  • Is there a 'normal weight tent recommendations' thread? My parents want to invest in some good quality camping kit for campsite holidays – something comfy, weatherproof and durable that they'll be transporting in a car. Ideally something they can stand up in/cook in the porch of.

I don't know anything about non-lightweight brands, so any recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • I'll take second dibs if @platypus bails, would need posting though

  • A Dutch tent like a De Waard might be good, or Erdman Schmidt if they don't mind going second hand.

  • The best non-lightweight tents are made by Hilleberg. They are exceptionally well made and hold their value extremely well. They are not cheap but you can expect a lifetime of hard use from one.
If they don’t want to spend that much, MSR and Big Agnes would be the brands to look for.

  • Wild Country (the cheap offshoot of Terra Nova) are fairly decent. I've had a Hoolie 2 for about 5 years, used fairly frequently and it's still going strong. They do a couple of big stand up in tents

  • on the opposite perspective my hoolie 2 broke twice in the 4 years i had it of moderate use (20-25 nights/year)

both times the a pole snapped while i was away from it and it tore through the sleeving, the first time they fixed it but it cost my £60-70 including a new pole, second time i didnt bother

  • and on that note if anyone is interested in the inner, ripped outer and one remaining hoolie 2 pole, you are welcome to collect it from se21

  • Bell tent with an awning?

Else they might like the airbeam stuff for ease of putting up?

  • I purchased the 2 person in white off that seller and it arrived really fast ! Looks the same to me.
