I’m after a 9-speed rear mech with clutch that can deal with a 40/42T cassette. Shimano/SRAM considered.

Also looking for appropriate shifter for this setup.

I thought clutch mechs only came in with 10spd?

I've heard this works but have had no personal experience so can't vouch for it:

...as a result, you can use any SRAM 9 speed shifter with a Shimano 10 speed rear derailleur and it will work perfectly with a 9 speed rear cassette.
