Cheers, I thought it was a reference to that, but I couldn't work out how pruning came into it. Judging from a quick search, prudence is not among the symbolic meanings usually associated with roses. Wikipedia suggests red for true love and white for innocence and purity, so perhaps something with a bit of both. :) (I don't think they have a traditional meaning--there are quite a few rubbish web-sites that suggest all sorts of meanings for them.)
