  • I dunno man. I’m honestly still well happy with my Duet really. Are you on Mac or pC?

  • @Velocio uses one for video conferencing iirc!

The controls are well thought out and if it sounds as good as it looks...

  • As we're on a recording gear tip...

Cheap but okay sounding condenser? What should I go for? I lost my SM57 in the flood that killed my old fuzzboxes, will an SM58 be okay to chuck in front of my amp? The Super Champ has a recording output but I doubt it'll be much cop...

I'm slowly edging towards doing something... 🐢

  • I normally recommend Audio Technica AT2020 for cheap condensers. Or if you can find an At3035 second hand, they're a better mic and can be had for not much more these days.

Shure says that the only difference between 57s and 58s is the grille, but others seem to disagree.

  • I'll check those condensers out, doubt I'll find a used one but I'll give it a go... Thanks... 🙃

I've got a loaner 58 which I can hang on to 'til something else turns up...

  • You can always take the grill off if you want it right on the cone but there is basically no difference in tonality.
I prefer a sennheiser e906 over a 57 though, it’s a bit less one-note and has some flexibility with the high lift/flat/cut switch.

  • I have this, it's wonderful.

The SSL button... doesn't do a great job.

But the USB interface, the output for headphones (high ohm), the knobs and feel, everything really. It's rock solid.

I've used it for guitar and voice, but have it set up for voice only at the moment as that is what I'm using it for.

  • My audio boffin pal reckons the Thomann own brand mics are great value for money!

  • Yeah this really should be in the music production thread but most of that seems to be focussed on synths and making beats.

Glad to hear the SSL is working out VB. It does look like a smart bit of kit for a ridiculous price.

I'm well out of date for cheap condensers. I still have my Rode NT1 from 15 years ago. Haven't used it for years. Will plug in a report back.

  • Finally got around to making some sawdust. Going alright so far! The neck pocket is beautifully snug.

  • Ha, that's definitely cleaner than my neck pocket. :D

  • I've just got this audient id4 - it's cracking, a few more quid than that presonus (which i was also looking at) - but not too spenny. Nice jfet pre amp for the guitar / zero latency / monitoring mix - first thing I did was plug in a guitar bang the gain up a bit and hit play on itunes - I could noodle along just fine without a DAW at all. I like the desktop form factor too.

  • My bargain Joyo octave fuzz arrived. Just re-jigging the board to fit it on...

  • Thanks, although I got a bit depth-y with the Forstener bit and left lots of spike marks. Not that you’ll ever see them, but lesson learned. How’s yours going?

  • thanks - thats just made my decision

  • Good-ish.
I have fabricated the pickguard and control plate, and punched the holes into the cavities where the electronics go. Slowly slowly...

Also started sanding the back. A lot of work, but the ash is so gorgeous.

  • After two weeks of waiting for a courier to show up and collect the Custom 22 (bloody parcel2go/ GLS) it has arrived in Wales with Rich for refinishing. Really looking forward to having this finished off now and hopefully my Waverly tuners arrive from StewMac before the guitar is back!

My 60gbp Dean ML has also arrived (along with tuners and headstock decal) it's disgustingly dirty and has a few bad gouges in the body which will need some filler before primer and then I can start painting it which is going to be be lots of fun! I think I'll get a set of Lace Sensor Matt Pike Dragonauts for it and set it up for C standard tuning. I actually can't get over how light it is also, I don't think I've ever owned an electric guitar that weighed so little which is weird for something with such a big body?

To top off all guitar news I've had my Duo-Sonic set up with bone nut and new tuners finally and it's so fantastically good I could probably do without all other electrics! I'll snap a few pictures later on :)

  • Cigar box guitar.
Something to sit out on the porch with all day 'till the sun goes down ...

    I want one.
    I'm going to get one.

    Thoughts ?

  • I have a porch now, I should be doing this as the sun is going down...

  • One terrifying learning experience with a router table, and...

  • Top work! That’s a great looking bit of wood.

  • That looks very nicely done!

Cleaned headstock, test fitted tuners and applied "inlay" this afternoon...

I'm getting far too much amusement from this.
