All other things being equal, does the size and amount of contact with the belt govern how fast each of those 7 items turn?
#6 looks well fast compared to #5

6 is the Alternator which I assume likes going like the clappers, whereas 5 is the water pump which would just cavitate at very high rpm (would be my guess).

Possibly the pulley on the alternator has seized. My mate looked at the pic.

It's booked in to have whatever is wrong fixed tomorrow, pray for C55.
In (related) news, what's wrong with this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-550i-M-SPORT-TOURING-2007-54K-MILES-AUTO-WHITE-LEZ-and-ULEZ-compliant/164232849294

Mercedes Benz use jubilee clips?
And have you watched Hoovies for all things BMW V8

The rotation of no. 4, the crankshaft pulley, is determined by how fast the engine is running. The rotation of the other pulleys will be inversely proportionate to the circumference of the pulley in question compared to the crankshaft pulley. If they're in good condition the idlers and tensioner pulleys should be able to spin very quickly without any difficulties as there's no load on them. All they have to do is spin, not drive any load.

I wonder if I could fit an intercooler in the nose of the 5 series.
-
• #54938
There's loads of room in mine but that's an i6.
-
• #54939
V8'd be shorter - moar winning.
-
• #54940
In that case you could probably get another V8 in there. Unless they've shifted it forwards at all - the i6 is pushed right back and painful to access.

It's a naturally aspirated engine. Why would you want to?
-
• #54942
I 100% would not actually turbo or supercharge it, I'd just drive it as is tbh.
Anyone like to buy a very fast Mercedes estate car?

If you don't have a charger which heats the air, you don't need an intercooler. You can have one if you really wanted, but it would do SFA.
On the other hand, you could buy an underpowered BMW v8 estate, add an aftermarket supercharger at great expense, and have a car which is nearly but not quite as good as your current WankerBarge at twice the cost.
Sounds perfect. Go for it.

362bhp and 490Nm from the 550i, which I admit is a bit anemic - giving away 5bhp and 21Nm to the C55.

Bit harsh. Although not sure that you've added up all of the C55 bills in that equation.

All top end too, not as much mid range grunt. You need a nice big positive displacement blower sticking out through the top of the bonnet. And a chrome ram scoop.

Optimistic, I'd say. I can't imagine that a slightly leggy BMW estate wouldn't trigger Dammit's OCD to an alarming extent even before any engine mods.

No. AMG 6.3 V8 or GTFO. One of the greatest engines ever made. If you're going to have a M-B, it's the only one to have.

The older, 5.4 litre is meant to be much stronger though, plus superchargers are cool.
And the earlier 6.3's have a reputation for breaking head bolts, which scares me.
No, it should spin freely. Sounds like that's the problem.
