Campag Xenon shifter issues

Posted on
  • Fixing up a friends bike, comes with Campag Xenon 10 speed. I've not worked on any Campag bits before, can anyone advise what gear/brake cable sets to get. Don't want to fluff it and get the wrong thing.

    Cheers

  • These are the shifters in question

  • They’re nothing special. Standard brake and gear cables will do, eg Clarkes from Halfords. Pull back the hood rubber and you’ll see where the gear cable goes.

  • I think Campagnolo cables are thinner? The fact I can't remember, and own two Campag'd bikes, isn't great.

    etc.

  • Maybe for the more expensive groups but Xenon was the base model. I had the same Xenon equipped Bianchi a while back and I just used regular cables without any issues.

  • Campag cables have different (smaller) ends to them, but nothing a bit of time with a file can't solve. I sometimes use SRAM 1.1mm cables and then file the end down so it's smaller. That's for Ultrashift levers though, Xenon Powershift might use standard ends.

  • Cables sorted, but not a new problem. On rear derailleur when I shift to a smaller cog, it goes all the way to the 11t, no matter where I am on the cassette. Put the new cables, cassette and chain on so I'm baffled.

    Any ideas on fixing this?

  • So it jumps all cogs at once?

How about shifting back up to bigger sprockets?

  • No issues going to the cassette other than the occasional missed shift due to use error. But lightly press the thumb shifter and it goes all the way to the 11t cog

  • I have a bad feeling the shifter has had it.

This is an issue with these shifters (It happened to my old campag Xenons years ago) where the plastic rachet wears out:

I'm sure there are diy solutions for those brave enough to try, but it may be a project of diminishing returns
