also just to say, in racing the central and London leagues, I remember 1, maybe 2, in the last two years races where the mud was deep enough to cause real issues. Admittedly I haven't done every race, but ime racing CX in the dry is far more common than expected.

Unnecessary point by me -

I think @nefarious is in Leeds, but in the north west, it's definitely a regular issue!

I’m just going to be zooming around on the tracks behind my house for now. Racing is a long stretch away!
-
• #4306
You’re a fairweather cross rider these days, no? I don’t think I saw you at a race after the clocks went back.
-
• #4307
Yeah Leeds, deffo lots of mud round here!
I run on the trails a lot (so I’ve been scoping out routes) and there’s a big variance in ground condition depending on recent weather. A couple dry weeks often lead to records being broken at fell races because the lack of mud speeds things up so much. -

Lighter than SS brake levers?

39/18-19T was my beginner gearing as well.
What was your 'medium effort' gearing?
-
• #4312
I did 40/18-19 for a couple of seasons and the last couple of years I ran 42/19-21 so same ball park. Now I am exhausted running 36/16

Haha, I run fucking 39/17 on my commuter for tarmack with slicks and its not slow. Try spinning the cranks instead.
-
• #4315
Who says I wasn't spinning?
-
• #4317
53 -11 seems a little low. I'm sure you could get a TT front ring and get a proper gear.

• #4318
while we're on the topic: what low-tooth SSCX chainrings are people using?
i can go 110 or 130 bcd and looking at something in the 36-39t range. Shimano Alfine have been reliable and cheap in the past, and certainly more durable than a Stronglight, IME
-
• #4319
Alfine
Plus it has chainguard for the trousers you will wear while racing cross
-
• #4320
bae i'm just gonna bang it on my baller Rival cranks with no room for the chainguard. chainguard sits BOXFRESH in my wardrobe
but look at this: https://www.bikemonger.co.uk/surly-stainless-steel-chainring-110bcd-123-p.asp

Am I being thick? Is there a reason I can’t use a narrow wide ring on a Ss? Found a nice 40t blackspire ring that’d sort the gearing on my arkose
-
• #4322
I have had nw run SS without issues.
Only ring I had in the parts bin and worked a treat -
• #4323
I’ve done the same, all works fine.

42/18 for life. 39/18 for anything muddy/offroad!

I have a N/W SS sprocket. Reckon a full N/W SS drivetrain would feel lovely.
I agree with the Fred. 3/32" is good.
39/18-19T was my beginner gearing as well.
