Alright. I’ve edited my previous, it could be read as too ... demanding ... I guess.

Does the looting that followed the protests in the US and the calls from Republicans to 'send in the troops', not make it very unlikely that USPD will be defunded?
-
• #329
Why do you think that? We have seen a lot of changes and concessions made in the last several weeks as a result of this direct action, along with a great change in public awareness and sentiment.

Not much from Trump. Whether he is re-elected is probably the key to what happens next.
-
• #331
I would actually feel bad for him if he got re-elected..
(i wouldn't)

• #332
Did we just have a Russian troll bot join the forum to post this?
-
• #333
Dunno, but Trump is definitely going to get re-elected.

I love (I don't love) that some people can be so certain about such things. Surely the last few years has shown that you actually don't know what the fuck is going to happen. Who knows if there will even be an election!

Anyway, sorry to derail this thread.
To get back on track, here's an email from the BFI that I thought was well considered and hopefully not just a token effort:

@chokalateboywonder this is a great thread, thank you. Also thanks to all those adding to the discussion, even those expressing dubious or confused views are helping by then being corrected!
I don't normally view the list of forums, but was looking for a good build thread to keep me off Ebay :) Instead I found this and was up way past my bedtime reading through. Thanks @branwen love that cartoon, really sums up the sigh at reading "all lives matter" as a comment on social media.
Also thanks @hoefla for clarification regarding "Oriental" I did not know that, I'd always just thought it was a fancy way of saying "Chinese"!

More on the topic of policing, but as there was some discussion on that I thought it was interesting.

Here's another fine example of a crap arrest:

I listened to velonews PYSO podcast with Justin Williams. Not sure he has all the answers on making cycling more inclusive but he’s got some interesting ideas around splitting crits from road racing. I do feel all the talk about how good his kit looks, everything custom and blingy etc might inspire some kids (he does look awesome) but also might just be another barrier as his set up looks mega ££&?
Unrelated to this I’m guessing everyone saw cycling news and cycling weekly covering Black Cyclists Network? -

Leading with "you gonna censor my views then, eh?" instead of a considered argument probably ain't the best start as it makes it look like your intention is to be purposefully inflammatory in order to wind up those "less tolerant members".
I'm sure that's not your intention though
-
• #341
come on guys, both sides yeah? i mean maybe some black lives don't matter... think about it.
-
• #342
will I be shouted down like I have seen in the past from some of the less tolerant members on this forum?
&
as a new member

You say you don't want to piss people off but then your very first message is a pretty brazen statement about Trump on a BLM thread which at best is tone def.
People here are open to thoughtful discussion, why don't you tell us about what you think about the killing of two black officers killed during the protests?
-
• #344
i don't believe you're here to have any arguments in good faith.
What 2 black police officers have been killed?
come to think of it, maybe this isn't the thread for this derailing bullshit. Try the news thread.

Yeah, overpriced wooly hats come to mind.

I've been discussing with people (prompted by it being on the back of football shirts) what Black Lives Matter means, in particular whether the phrase specifically relates to the campaign in the US https://blacklivesmatter.com/what-we-believe/ , a UK version of this (although the UK site is pretty light on UK specific details http://blacklivesmatteruk.com/briefing/ ) or is a more general call.
My thought is more the third but, I guess, if that's the case then it is a bit vague. Others I've seen, generally trying to discredit it, link it solely to the US movement and suggest that isn't as relevant to the UK.
I'm just wondering what people view it as representing? Is it directly linked to the US movement or has that just galvanised the issue in this country but we are looking for different outcomes?
It's a bit of a vague question but hopefully people can see what I'm asking.

Hm, I think the problem here is equating looters to protesters. It's easy to see them as the same in these situations but I think the reality is that the people out to rob shops and kill people aren't exactly protesting or killing in the name of BLM.
Which is why saying stuff like BLM only care about some black people is careless. IMO.

maybe start with an avatar and a real username? put some effort in, jeez!

Well yeah, it appears "some black lives" don't matter to BLM!!!!
It is entirely possible to simultaneously hold the beliefs that; it is a shame that a tiny number of police officers have been killed (far more die every year due to RTAs during traffic stops, for e.g. link), and that protests about the overwhelming volume of violence and abuse committed by the police on black and other minorities are important to highlight the systematic abuses that appear to be inherent in countries ideas of policing.
This is not the the gotcha that you seem to think it is
I'm not trying to persuade you though, that sort of thing doesn't typically happen in a direct interaction on an internet forum but rather through gradual exposure to ideas.
You've already wondered
in a thread directly provoked by mass brutality against people of colour by the police.
So I think it will take more than me providing some links to persuade you of this.
