  • Might depend on which Dura ace, the ones I've seen are all plastic, maybe older ones were metal, did Saint have a nice Saint gold metal one?

  • Those knackered cranks don't look too knackered to me but hard to tell with photos, you can get a replacement left crank for about £90, if they're fucked then the seller should cover that.

  • 7800 did, don't know about the recent ones.

Yes @snottyotter Saint ones are anodized gold aluminum.

  • Only applies to posted items afaik.

If you’re collecting and it’s acceptable to pay cash then it’s equally acceptable to do a bank transfer / gift or whatever.

  • Is it not also outlawed to offer things by PM, or do I imagine that (don't use Classifieds very often)?

    Hm, the rules only say:

You must post the classified advert in the Classifieds forum.

What's the actual rule/convention about that?

  • did Saint have a nice Saint gold metal one?

    Sure did

  • Tbh I recently bought a car and a week later the fuel pump went, I suppose it's the risk you take buying used. I'd always recommend if buying used checking everything is torqued correctly before riding, or getting a service from your local friendly bike shop.

Personally I would have given you some money back but everyone's situation is different.

  • 7800 did

Ah, interesting. Odd that they felt it necessary, given the very low torque settings. I quite like the aftermarket alloy ones with an allen key fitting, as it means I can set the preload torque very (unnecessarily) accurately.

  • Asked the seller about it and he denied there being any issues previously and was not supportive in this issue

That attitude sounds disappointing, moreso than the broken crank.

  • tell me about it, i would have thought maybe it was an oversight on his part and could have helped but now if you think about it

deceived me as a seller and got of his problem

the fact he was being a douche about it annoyed me more than the actual fault with the bike

  • DA innit... ;)

    Bling4eva

  • This looks suspect too...

  • Ahaha that's what I thought but its fine, he had taped over some parts of the bike mainly the places where the names were.

In terms of actual damage to the frame didn't find any, just the crank as it stands

  • Ill still do PayPal for a £400 purchase unless it's someone with good rep on here (debatable...).

  • Seen that exact damage before, where the 24mm axle doesnt protrude out of the bottom bracket enough and crank arm is only half on the 24mm axle. The example I saw was on a Fargo that was supposed to be a 68mm shell, but was actually 71mm (not 73 and the frame spec said 68). As a result the splines werent fully in the crank arm and stripped the inside of the crank arm just like that pic.

It looks on one of the pictures that the spindle isnt all the way through. Wonder why that is? Is there a spacer on either the drive side bb cup or chanset spindle that shouldnt be there? Maybe to allow the chainring on the inner chainset tabs to be far enough out not to hit the chainstays? Fix that problem and a new crank arm should sort it.

  • I paypal GS everything, except the odd few who I "know" well, if people are happy to send via other means thats on their head, I always ask for paypal though.

  • Never had and never will, 600 Tricolor was my blingest, XT M8000 currently although I do have an XTR lever!

  • I assumed that he did 20s test ride so it was most likely collection ?
If collected I wouldn't see reason to pay goods and services PayPal to be honest

  • Maybe it’s just me, but I still would. I just use it for everything though; as revealed above... 20s test ride doesn’t really show much

  • So much misinformation in the last couple of pages. I'm embarrassed for you all. Worship at the alter of Shimano and ye shall be absolved.

PS: XTR and DA are normally plastic pre-load. I think maybe my 9spd Ultegra had a metal one.

    The splines are fine. New...

Buy a £400 thing from a random with no escrow feature. Unless you're made of money (and if you were you wouldn't be complaining about a crank) quite silly.

@Howard who the hell is using a ball end to tighten cranks?! I bet some idiot is, but damn, name and shame them for their own safety!

  • In terms of buying/selling it's always buyer beware but in terms of 'not being a dick' the seller might want to contribute to a crank arm replacement.

  • Sometimes they’re just stiff and need some encouragement to go through. I’m going to guess the bike was sold without a preload cap, because I can’t see how the crank would “fall off” if it had one.

I reckon if you hit that crank with a rubber mallet from the drive side the left crank would fit no problem and stay on.

  • Here, look closer at those jagged teeths...
