This article was written before the publication of Theresa May's commission by the person who Johnson has appointed to run his commission.
I despair.
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/theresa-may-s-phoney-race-war-is-dangerous-and-divisive
It is interesting that one of the conclusions implied by that article seems to be that variances in outcomes for different racial groups is down to socio-economic inequalities and not institutional racism. However, does that not mean that the failure of successive governments to tackle socio-economic inequalities is actually in fact institutional racism?

You think some statues gone and that's job done?
Didn't say that.
We beat racism, let's pack it up and go home.
Didn't say that either.
There's a difference between
- It's being overstated
- Some people will use it as an excuse for doing nothing else
- If it isn't built on futher the opportunity will have been wasted.
- If it isn't joined up with other issues then it risks obscuring them.
And
- It did nothing.
That's all I'm saying. But please, do go on finding shitty things I didn't say. Maybe from the collected musings of Tommy Robinson or Nigel Farage.
- It's being overstated

Doesn't 'examination' mean that it hasn't been granted yet? I don't know much about trademarks, but I can't imagine this being approved in virtue of the words being used very widely as a matter of public interest.

Go on Demetriou, sue people for using a phrase
Just do it... -

Yes, they've been applied for but not yet granted. Looks like they are mainly in the area of clothing although one also has charity wristbands.
Even if it did go through you could only enforce it in the specific areas they've applied for, not use of the phrase generally.

I believe the idea is that you can fund things which reduce the occurrence of crime, like education, addiction support and mental health services. Or just various other municipal things that improve people's quality of life more than police officers with extremely expensive military equipment going into economically deprived communities where people are desperate, jobless and facing mass-eviction.

Who’s made a good argument for this so-far? ... when the quality of personnel and training (not cheap issues to solve) seem so clearly to be at fault.
The extremely expensive military equipment doesn’t cost US police anything. It’s excess military stock. Defund the military.

Maybe from the collected musings of Tommy Robinson or Nigel Farage.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Jog the fuck on.
Why don't you try not ignoring the rest of my post too?
In fact, instead, why don't you ignore me altogether.
Proper cunt thing to say to me.

Defund the military.
Not a realistic proposition sadly.
Program 1033 makes sense on paper: equipping small and mid-size (read: underfunded) police forces with tactical equipment to take on serious threats (read: counter-terrorism, also supposedly the war on drugs but that’s another kettle of fish).
In reality it allows for increased military spending (because any surplus will find good use, right?), and it’s encouraged cops to feel like they’re going to war. Defunding the military is, IMO, bridge too far. Defunding the police and refunding other institutions just might be achievable this time.
The system isn’t broken, it’s working like it’s designed to, whether intentionally or not. It needs a full rehaul, or the issues will continue wearing away at American society from within.

Defunding the police as an idea has been around for a long time. In the 60's Angela Davis was a big supporter. More recently Alex Vitale wrote The End of Policing.
Only 5% of arrests are for violent crimes. As mentioned previously, armed police are the first contact for anyone having a mental health episode, any drug related issues, interventions at schools etc, situations for which an armed responder is not ideal. The idea is to reduce policing budgets and use that money for specialist support/intervention teams that would have much more positive results in these situations.

I find the term 'taking our country back' offensive, stupid and fitting to those who use it.
-This is our country, made their homes here, their lives and those that live here.
-Who are you taking the country back from? or is more back too some sort fo fascist state that the country fought against in Europe.
-Taking the country backwards and not forwards. -

The End of Policing.
That’s actually been on my reading list for a while. I should probably stfu ‘till I get it read.

Not sure if these books have been mentioned: 'The Scramble for Africa' by Thomas Packenham, and 'King Leopold's Ghost' by Adam Hochschild.

Who’s made a good argument for this so-far?
Actual BLM orgs rather than celeb grifters coopting their movement.
when the quality of personnel and training (not cheap issues to solve)
seem so clearly to be at fault. This is the argument made by people who have no actual interest in improving the situation. See Joe Biden's "shoot them in the knee", "give the police an extra 300 million" one-two combo. The system is fundamentally broken, it can't be incrementally improved by technocratic solutions.

It's funny, and they should have the piss taken out of them but this has been photoshopped, spelling, bra and piss stains at least ain't in the original.

I ask who has made good arguments because I wanted to hear the good arguments. I’m not interested in judging the intent of the individuals - that’s no use.
What do you think that dramatic impact is? Exposure? Amplification?
I've tapped out of a lot of news since C19, but I listened to R4 Any Answers at the weekend to hear the comments. My takeaway was WornCleat and NurseHolliday are 100% on the money. A handful of people trying desperately to move the conversation on. Everyone else: Statues.
I would not be the least bit surprised if the chat about Churchill's statue didn't come straight out of No.10 comms. unit.
