  • Cryptographically signed trackpoints is the answer, it wouldn't be too hard for one of the major GPS manufacturers (Garmin, Polar, Suunto, etc) to do.

    #unfuckwithabledata

  • Sounds great and if the GPS manufacturers start linking up the the v platforms I'm sure that would really help. Maybe pitch that solution? Gtn said ironman are currently looking into ways to prevent v cheating and as its a new but growing problem I assume manufacturers and v race organisers are going to be all ears for this kind thing.

  • Ta, much popcorn.

  • I thought v racing was meant to be a bit of fun but it turns out it can be just as depressing as real racing.

    Sad truth :(

  • I once accidentally logged a bike ride as a run in Strava, and only got 2nd overall on a fire road through the woods...
    :(

  • Today I wore my new 1000 mile socks. I’ve never worn proper running socks before. Wow. They are great. I also wore my new saucony fastwitch which are also great. A great day!

  • My heart rate strap smells like death, but worse. It's one of the Garmin ones that has the sensor built into it so I have been hand washing it with soapy water, but that's clearly not effective.

Should I risk putting it through the washing machine, or does someone know of a better way to exorcise the stench demon that is currently in residence?

  • You could try leaving it outside on a hot day - Some UV might help reduce the residing bacteria and stench.

  • Try spraying with some white vinegar mixed with water (and some nice smelling essential oils if really bothered). Vinegar gets rid of smells, and doesnt smell itself once dried. Used on trainers a few times

  • Cheers Hats, I have a couple of pairs coming so looking forward to that. Re: Decathlon goggles... I think good goggles are a myth, I’ve yet to find some that don’t fog/leak/suck my eyeballs out.

  • Yeah that's kind of the conclusion I've come to, I've been swimming since I was 4 and still can't find goggles that fit my stupid face. Still gonna be bitter that I lost the last pair though.

  • I wear prescription goggles and there's only a few different manufacturers/styles of them. 50% success rate so far but the good ones are far from perfect.

I could get away with normal goggles if required, but I've grown used to being able to see where I'm going (more important for open water swimming).

  • Turns out the decathlon socks were 2 pairs for £4 so I’m sorted for the next decade.

  • Popped out to try and do a steady half, aiming for sub 2hr, preferably sub 9 mile pace. Lost a few minutes having to navigate a triple prong fence, with the official strava half time saying 2:00:40 but moving time 1:59:46 and distance a bit more than a half. I’m taking it, but it doesn’t taste as sweet as it could have!
Also, had expected it to be overcast/wet so ran carrying food and jacket in case it went pear shaped - but got totally cooked by the sun instead!

Bah. Mediocre running from mediocre training. Glad it’s done.

  • I did a Virtual Endure 24 solo attempt yesterday. Bailed at 56 miles just before midnight. Think it was the right decision but feeling a bit of a failure today.

Running hasn't felt good for the past 2 weeks and yesterday I just felt bad from the first step. Knees ached after about 5 miles, semi-rolled my ankle which pulled something on the outer rear of my knee causing issues later on, didn't drink enough early on, shoulders felt really tight (never had that before) and just felt like I never really got going.

  • 56 miles when you don't feel like you've got going is pretty amazing, well done and rest up with some good snacks!

  • Thanks hats. Just a bit frustrating as I've run further, faster, and felt significantly better doing it so I know it's not how it normally feels.

  • So a quick question from a running novice.

I've really got back into running during lockdown and have found myself starting to enjoy it again. Last week was a big week for me, the most I've ran in a week for years.

But towards the end of the week my shins were hurting, like even to the touch hurting.

Is this just volume of running or is there something in my running technique that I'm doing wrong?
I'm looking to get gait analysis done as soon as the shops open again.

  • Fingers crossed my inexpert internet diagnosis is wrong, but that sounds like shin splints. Which are incredibly annoying.

Ive had shin splints once and it was from doing a lot of running, football and hockey after a period of little to no impact sport. It meant another 6 weeks with 0 impact sport, cycling and swimming was ok, everything else was off the table. You have to fit in enough rest when you ease back into the repetitive motion and impact stuff.

Edit to add NHS link, just in case....

  • Thank you very much, I had suspected something similar.

This week will mostly be HIIT workouts as I wanted to take it easy on the legs. I'll see how they feel tomorrow before I head out for a run.

  • went for what felt like a fast walk today as I wasn't in a running mood and needed to collect some books and a laptop, yeh the second half sucked :/

  • So I’ve tried these exercises a little bit and they have really helps. I haven’t had any pain in my ankle since. I just do a couple of sets per day. I think I may even tempt fate and go for a jog soon

  • London to be cancelled this Sunday, I reckon.
