I'm building 451 wheels which is also the size omnium spec on their full builds. My search found mostly junior BMX race rims with really low weight limits but I'm going on the assumption that those are because of the number of cases landings they expect them to get.
If it's 36h Alan's BMX have some NOS AKAI rims cheap. Otherwise Halo were the most available I could find in the UK.

Wouldn't bother with 451 on the Omnium. Go 406 and put a bigger tyre on. Much wider availability of suitable rims and tyres.

ah brilliant, those are great tips, cheers dude.
Any ideas of what sort of rims to look at (my knowledge of 20in / bmx rims is v limited) So far i looked at the Halo T2 and Halo EX3.

yeah this is basically the reason i'm going for 406

Cheers! yeah been finding Halo and there seems to be more availability for 406 rims.

Ah that's great, looking at a couple of T2 rims on ebay. Cheers

A spoke snapped on my rear wheel. I want to try replacing it myself.
Can I just take another spoke off the wheel and go to my LBS with the spoke to buy a replacement spoke?

If its from the same side and theres nothing weird going on with the hub then yes. I have loads of spare spokes in random lengths if you want one for free

Any wheel builders on here have a silver pair of 20/24 bitex? Bought a set off eBay that have arrived and seem great but they’re black so I’ll hold onto them for another project
Cheers in advance,

Cheers. Measures 270mm. I’m not in London though!

Daft question but im gonna build my first wheel. Spoke Calc says i need 244 left and 246.8 right.
I can get the 244 left spokes but I can only get 246 or 248 spokes for the right. What one should I get?
Thanks

246mm round down nearly always

Went for 246 as a guess and 14mm nipples. Hope they do.

406 rim and 36h hub with a 52.6mm flange distance - 2 cross or three?

Lickle wheels don't work well with 3x.

Guessed but don’t have the figurin’ skills to confirm.

Lickle wheels don't work well with 3x
When I were a lad, the local shop built BMX race & vert wheels 4X and they survived everything that anybody could throw at them.

That's true, they just seem weird when I do it though.

It's just trigonometry, all you have to do is calculate the angle between the spoke as built and a notional radial centreline spoke. You already know the 3 polar coordinates of each end of the spoke to do your length calculation.

The issue is more likely at the hub than the rim, even building a BMX rim 3X 36 to a large flange track hub isn't going to exceed the limits of nipple articulation unless the rim has been drilled exactly radial, which is unlikely.
At the hub, if you get close to true tangent spoking you start to see an obvious double bend, first where the outbound spoke comes out of the hole and lies against the flange, and then again as it bends round the edge of the flange in order to take aim at the rim. -

Forgot to mention the rear is a coaster which may affect required strength, but I doubt it with such a small rim.

I run 700x35 tyres on 19mm internals rim(Aksium) .
I'm less than 70kg all wrapped up in winter,
light touring,
the Aksium held up really well to all the mtb I have thrown at them.I have some 32 holes Hope hubs I'd like to use.
I 'm looking at wtb i23 kom and kinlin TL 23 rims,
both 23m internal width.Would love some feathery U shaped 35mm deep marvels from afar,
but costs are sobering.Anything else I should consider?

Ive got a set of old Bontrager Race X lite wheels on my commuter with paired spokes. They may or may not have the DT swiss made hubs, I can't tell, but they have survived 4 years of commuting on the same SKF bearings and still spin really well,. The rear rim is worn out . I didn't think you could lace paired spoke hubs to standard rims, but I've just noticed another old Xero wheel I have does exactly this, though it is 20 spoke vs the 24 on the Bontrager. Does this mean I could follow the same 2x lacing pattern easily or does spoke length get complicated?

does spoke length get complicated?
It will need adjustment to allow for the irregular spacing.
I've had the Halo T2 on the front of my Omnium for the last 70 000km. Still going strong. Now laced up to a SP dynamo with no issues.
