Giant Trance 29 2. Probably the perfect UK do-it-all bike at that budget and there is no obvious skimping on any components.

Commencal Metas are good fun. And good value
Personally, I looove Turners, no horrible push-fit (shitty) bearings, just nice re-packable bushings, DW link.... Blinkin' pricey though, so you'd have to go very second hand
