Downtube/friction shifters question!

Posted on
  • Hey bike hive mind,

Just picked up a pretty old mercier and it’s all pretty much there, only needed a little bit of tlc, however one of the down tube shifters keeps loosening.

I’ll tighten the screw that attaches it to the frame to stiffen it up, and it’ll work for a few rides, then begins not to hold position and spring back, I’ll tighten again and around and around we go. I’ve taken it apart, cleaned it and reattached to no avail. I’d love to know if anyone else has had this issue, would rather fix than buy a new one although I feel like grabbing a new one may well be easier.

    Thanks
    Knee hurts

  • It’s quite possible that the bushing is squashed-squsished-pancaked etc.

    What shifter is it?

  • Maybe a drop of Loctite on the thread?

  • Thanks, I’ll definitely give the loctite a go!

I don’t believe it has bushings but I may be wrong?

  • One of the lock nuts is not symmetrical on Simplex,
    try to turn it around.
