see if the tyres and frame will hate each other
They don't. Super rad!

Hubjub possibly, but I tend to use Velosolo.

I’ve got one you can have I think (assuming you mean the spacers to make a cassette hub into ss). Youre near Manchester?

Looking nice! Actually really digging the tires.
Here’s mine in its current form (please note the correct hipster mandated chainring)

Yeah, looking for the spacers, plus a 19t and 20t cog. I have an old cassette (a few, probably) but would prefer a thicker one with full-height teeth. I'm in Prestwich.

love it! assume the bars will be anodized purple?
i think i'm gonna go with sweet, sweet grey tape for mine

Velosolo kit, token lock ring and surly cog works great. Chain line is bang on -
• #4285
In a hurry? Reckon I've got lightly used 20t Surly cog, might have a 19t too. Not back in Manchester until ~9th July though.

Thanks – I'd probably look to grab one before then. Maybe I'll buy a 19 and wait to see if you have a 20?

Works for me. If I get over to Manchester before the 9th I'll check the spares box and let you know for sure.

Bought this lad off here to build an SSCX beater with. Few bits in the post already, but I have no fucking idea what I’m doing tbh.

SS conversion kits, chain tensioners and chains - talk to me!
All the ss conversion kits look pretty cheap or a bit expensive - is there anything in that? Or should I just buy the On One version for a tenner?
Chain tensioners - was going to buy a DMR one, but only because that’s the only one I knew of. Cheaper/better options?
And chains - should I run 3/32 or is it a better idea to try and run an 1/8 chain and get an 1/8 cog for the back?
This is all for a very beatery beater.
Also, gearing - what is reasonable/a good starting point? How many GI do people aim for? 50-60?

I have a WI Eno hub you can have for £60 plus shipping. It will be far better than trying to use a chain tensioner imo.

The Planet X conversion is only 2 pieces, I'd go with multiple cassette spacers, to give more options on chainline, or if you want to go dingle-speed. I've used DMR they are fine, cheaper will also be fine, I guess.

I don’t think I can spend more on a hub than I did on the frame. Lol. Cheers for the offer tho. This is a tentative dipping my toe into SSCX/ CX in general, so keeping costs down is a must.

the On One version
These have been fine IME. I liked 60" for flat stuff

Planet X conversion is only 2 pieces
Ah, fair point. Will look for something vaguely less budget.

For gearing, I have found 38 or 39 x 19 to be OK for racing, but will drop it even further this season because when the mud is really heavy, it just kills you. If this is for fun, you'll never be dealing with race-level mud, so soemthing like 39x19 will do

For dipping toe in, dicta freewheels are fine.
-
• #4297
Converting a set of 9/10 speed as it’ll be cheaper (on account of Fizzy Bleach’s kind donation of wheels).
-
• #4298
39x19 will do
Sounds like a good starting point. Thanks everyone for advice. Been so long since I built a bike of any kind.

In that case, smashing apart SRAM cassettes is also acceptable. If you have one to hand.

stick with 3/32 imo. if andre greipel can't snap a 11 speed chain I see no reason for the additonal weight
This is going to be awesome!
