  • Does anyone near N1 have an angle grinder I can borrow? I've got a front basket that's fouling my cables and di2 junction box, just need to modify the basket a little bit.

  • That's giving a depreciation of £15.64 per month, if the depreciation is linear that means a £419 fridge would have a life expectancy of 26 months. Is that reasonable?
Ask them to show their workings

  • @frankenbike thanks for answering and apologies for the late acknowledgement, much appreciated

  • Some items arrived in the UK on 8 May, the other on 28 May. What the heck have they been doing in the UK since then?!

    Customs.

  • if the depreciation is linear

I know some depreciation is treated linearly, but I would have thought a consumer item like this is exponential decay? I believe it's typically done as depreciation rate = N x linear rate where N is 1.5 or 2.

Either way, @Silly_Savage, that seems quite a steep depreciation. What's the warranty, 12 months?

  • Yeah 12 months

  • Can anyone recommend a front light that will last 12 hours on a non flashing mode?

  • For an overnighter

  • front light that will last 12 hours on a non flashing mode

Moon lights can be run from an external USB power bank. That's probably going to be the small/light/cheap alternative to running a weapons grade light in low.

e.g. there are 5Ah power banks on Amazon at around £10 which are 102mm long and 30mm diameter, which is only slightly bigger than a Moon Nebula. Add a 6" USB cable and some zip ties and you're ready to ride all night.

  • My old hope vision one goes for ages on mix of medium/low. It's a chunky boi though.

  • Quote the sale of goods act at them? IIRC they have to last a reasonable lengthy of time to be fit for purpose; I think 2 years minimum is the presumption for expensive things like white goods.

  • thanks all!

  • Yeah, that's the premise under which I'm getting the refund, it's just the amount is done with their own calculator, which the person on the phone can't won't divulge. I just wondered what legal footing I have to challenge this amount.

  • I thought you automatically got 2 years warranty under EU laws?

  • 2 years warranty under EU law

I'd not seen that, will look further in to it. Thanks.

  • I just wondered what legal footing I have to challenge this amount.

Durability is an implied contract term under the sale of goods act. A normal expected durability of a domestic refrigerator would be about 10 years. Tell them they have to repair or replace or you'll file a claim in court. An offer of monetary compensation below the purchase price is something you may accept at your sole discretion if you prefer it to the remedies the seller is legally obliged to provide. There is nothing to stop you making a counteroffer if you want to give them a choice. In respect of a fridge which fails inside two years I'd probably counteroffer that 75-80% of the purchase price would buy me off, but only if I actually wanted the opportunity to switch to a different model.

  • They wouldn't budge on the valuation. I think I'm just going to take the £200 and accept that I got shafted by corporate scum, it's caused me too much stress and time already.

Having a closer look at the act, it doesn't specify how much they're allowed to deduct for use (If the consumer exercises the final right to reject, any refund to the consumer may be reduced by a deduction for use, to take account of the use the consumer has had of the goods in the period since they were delivered)

p.s. don't buy from Currys, they're a right shower of cunts.

double edit: if I'm excersizing my 'right to reject' can I make them come and pick it up?. The act seems to say they are liable for my costs in returning it to them.

  • if I'm excersizing my 'right to reject' can I make them come and pick it up?

Yes, but it's both too late and too early to reject it. You're past the point where you can reject it and get a full refund based it's not being initially as described or fit for purpose, but to reject it now you have to at least give them a chance to repair it, and for that repair to fail to bring it up to an acceptable standard.

  • Has anyone bought anything from Wish?

Not personally, but every report I've seen says you won't get what you think you're buying. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is, and Wish seems to exist solely to prove that to anybody who still doesn't get it.

  • It’s the same as the cheap stuff you get on eBay and Ali Express. A lot of it’s fine, a lot of it’s not fit for purpose. I don’t think there’s anything special about Wish in that regard.

  • I don’t think there’s anything special about Wish

My impression is that they sail pretty close to the wind in terms of outright fraud, more so than eBay and AliEx traders. I assume those platforms keep a slightly closer guard on the reputational damage that comes from being a hangout for crooks, while Wish is at the stage of prioritising growth over reputation.

Since they like gamifying shopping, you should take that on board and treat any purchase as being more like buying a lottery ticket than an actual certainty of getting what you're paying for.

  • What size frames are thought to look best 'proportion-wise' with 700cc wheels?

Am biased but am keen on 58cm.

  • 49CM, just perfect.

  • I am sure it's been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer...

Why do I see A LOT of empty CO2 canisters by the side of the road/on the road? Sometimes as many as 15-20 in one spot. What the hell is that about? Are there so many cyclists that are di*ks?
