What is irking is that it seems to be yet another "most of Conservatives/kippers/etc up in arms" VS "most Labour/LibDems/Greens may not agreeing perse but understanding the issues".
Would be nice if a Conservative thinking/figurehead would stand up and say "Hey remember we thought slavery was good, then it wasn't? We don't have to celebrate people with really problematic views, remember when we all, including commonwealth and mainland Europe fought against Hitler? That dude though Hitler was sorta ok, well most of us didn't."
That would require there to be conservatives who were capable of acting in good faith rather than cynically stoking the culture war for their own ends. I’ll hang on a minute whilst we all count how many of those there are.

In Charlton, there’s a Wharf, house, pub etc named after a business man who was in the slave trades just to make money to buy arts (Angerstein) and benefit from it.
