I like those odds and I like purple, which is good as I think I already have a pair of Hope's on the way. Lockdown 40th present to myself, sadly not the titanium version I dreamed of in my youth.

I built a Franken-bike in high school with a friend when I was 17 out of an old Schwinn.
I shipped that bike over to the UK from Chicago not long ago.
I’m now 40. The bike and all its components have survived Chicago winters and everything else thrown at it with a few little mods here and there.
The other week, a spoke broke. Thing weighs a tonne so, heck, let’s get some Velocity Deep V rims and build from scratch.
Now, I’m stuck. Only ever built one wheel in my life (and it’s holding up damn fine, thanks) but it was a front wheel. The rims I want to get are 32h. I need a decent, hard wearing rear hub in silver. I know the spokes I want to use (Sapim CX Ray, don’t try to change my mind). I may even have a clue as to the front hub I want. I just need some guidance on the rear hub. Ideally, it will be flip-flop as I don’t want to be stuck fixed, especially with a kid on the way. Budget isn’t insane. I am not a weight weenie, either.
Ideas welcome. Thank you. -

And? You haven't seen the frankenbike.... 😂😂😂

When you have kids you have to go freewheel, it’s fixielaw

All good. Freewheel it is. This then narrows it down to um...what does it narrow it down to? Options? Ideally one that doesn't have "Phil" scribbled on the hub or would require the sale of a kidney.

Wheelbuiders of LFGSS...
Ive got some 700c novatec wheels, they are 130mm qr rear. I need to make them 135mm QR. Anyone know if there is a novatec end cap to extend or do i have to find a 5mm spacer of some description.
Dont reall want to bend the frame in to 130mm
Cheers.

do i have to find a 5mm spacer
No, you need to find two 2.5mm spacers 🙂
Even if you knew which of dozens of possible models of Novatec hub you have, you'd be unlikely to find, much less be able to buy, off the shelf parts to add 2.5mm to each side.

Cheers for the quick reply. Ill have a hunt around for some spacers.

This was a success.
Not used Kinlin rims before - very impressed. Open Pros I’m building next look agricultural by comparison.

Found some pretty nasty cracks in my back rim so looking for a replacement - I’ve found one where the ERD is 3mm less.
I’ve not got much a clue with this sort of thing, but if we were all betting men, would it be a straight swap?

ERD is 3mm less
Spokes on the existing build would have to be verging on too short to make a 3mm drop in ERD viable. Spokes are cheap, pick the best rim for the job and get new spokes.
Also, you're unlikely to love the 3mm drop in rim internal width.

Hey everyone, I wonder if anyone here built a 20inch front wheel around a Dynamo hub?
Planning on building a front wheel for my Omnium Cargo. Will be around the SP PL-8X thinking of a 406 rim, don't know where to start with rims that would work with this hub? same with spokes etc.
Is there anything i should look out for in this area? any recommendations from anyone who might have done this before?
cheers!

Ah yeah, good point. Cheers

Loud and clear - went back on the hunt and found another dt swiss rim with the same specd erd with a closer rim width.
I’ll be back in 5 days crying that I don’t understand what I’m doing.

Since the SP PD-8 hub is available as part of the Omnium dynamo upgrade I'd imagine it's been tested for cargo use.

So my cheap dynohub and a spokey arrived from Rose Bikes, and now I need to set about trying to build it up into a wheel. Currently there's an Araya PX-45 on there, which seems to be no longer available, but it's a trad-looking box section rim; as my current wheel has done a couple of thousand km, I'm not sure it's worth reusing. I would like to continue using the 35mm Hyper Voyagers I've got on there, as they're comfy and reasonably fast for a touring tyre; what cheapish rims (36h) would folks recommend? This would be for day rides/light rough-stuffing rather than loaded touring. Kinlin ADHN are supposedly ~500g, Exal lx17 a bit more, and then you seem to be into heavy touring rims - Sputniks and the like. TB14s look nice but pricey.

👀 ahh nice well spotted. Good to know. Thank you.

There is a carbon 406 rim for sale in the classifieds at the moment

The dyno hub will be fine, built loads like these. Get yourself a 32h shallow rim, so the angle of the spokes is not as severe. Build it 2 cross for the same reason. You can also get the smaller Sp dynamo that's specific for small wheels.
Ah, yes... that makes sense... I wasn’t thinking of the Pretty and Strong ones...
