Lanshan 2 might fit, discussion here worth reading
How about a special tall people UL tent, this one has rave reviews
I would also try MYOG, pyramid tent is not the hardest thing to make by far -

Req = lightweight
That tent weights 1700g!! -

He's not racing, I think 2kg was the limit and he's more concerned about pack size really. But fair point.

And that's where the hidden constraint comes into the picture, don't think the budget will stretch that far. And based on that review the Lanshan 2 is not going to cut it.

Boy am I glad I didn't get a Coshee Micro for my birthday last year.
-
• #1757
it's alright, not too late to come over to the tarp side
-
• #1758
well in that case he needs to buy a tarp and groundsheet, or make it himself.

The lanshan 2 pro is bigger as it's single skin with bug netting only where needed. This gives you a bit more space.
It sounds like you can get a bit of condensation, but this will be twice as bad with two people in it. Solo, I'd have though the bigger size would mean less than condensation than the lanshan 1 pro / six moon designs version.
I'm umming and ahhing about getting the 1 pro as I type. Only about £100 at the moment.

I share his on the fence-ness about tarps, maybe when I have a bit more solo camping experience. I grew up camping like this , not bringing a comfortable chair and not being able to stand up in a tent is all very strange to me.

Oh, that's interesting!

Just bare in mind it doesn't come with poles, as it is designed to be pitched with two telescopic hiking poles - if bikepacking that means either taking hiking poles or buying a couple of carbon collapsable poles for the job. This will add £60 to the cost.
I've also been trying to snipe cheap old dutch tents for our family camping. We're just about out growing our lovely brown canvas ridge tent, so a dutch pyramid tent is on the watch list. Do you parents still have yours? Dibs if so.

They sure do, that picture was taken when I went camping with my partner last year. Don't think it's ever going to be for sale, too much memories and still a brilliant tent as long as you can arrange a car big enough to bring it.

Any thoughts on the Gatewood Cape/Shelter?
I saw it recommended to a buddy elsewhere earlier and it looks (at risk of another Lockdown pile on) interesting.

Good plan!

For cycling, poncho tarps are a nono sadly, they billow out in the air like nothing else. For walking they’re ok.
SMD products come highly recommended, I have a (non-poncho) floorless 1p tarp that was £60 second hand and has housed me very happily on solo trips all over Europe. -

Understood... this'd be for ultra distance multiday self supported on foot aka fastpacking for want of a better description. I'd be carrying walking poles. Looking for quickish pitch & pack up for short wildcamp rests ideally plus more wriggle room than bivy affords when legs tired.
This option has potential weight saving of not carrying additional waterproof jacket.
I'm also looking at a z-lite sol mat but that's a different thread.
Good to hear SMD are highly recommended, ta.

Plenty of love for the Gatewood over on Bearbones. I'm quite tempted to get one for the extra coverage compared to my flat tarp, and to have the option of summat to sit in if it's chucking it down (though appreciate it wouldn't be ideal for riding in).

Sounds perfect for your application then.

not bringing a comfortable chair
just an fyi the helinox chair zero is a very decent compromise if you're not going ultra-ultralight. after hiking 20 miles with a ~15kg backpack it was my most prized possession in the world for a few hours. there are knockoffs but none are close to the weight of the helinox

Would be nice to have a comfortable place to sit before sliding into my coffin....

I recently noticed a small crack on one of the plastic parts of my 4 year old Helinox Ground Chair, filled in the online form (5 year warranty) and had a replacement less than a week later.
They are expensive but the comfort combined with my recent customer service experience makes it decent value in my mind.
