  • I had a Scott Tinley Raleigh technium, used a 26.8 seatpost.

    Miss that bike :)

  • Yes I have an actual one which is so heavy (this is why I want to change it).
I mesured it at a shop and felt like it was 27. Just seems like a non usual size and found most of the old technium are 26.8 on internet.

  • I still have a 1993 Trek 970 frameset in the attic waiting for restoration. It was my brothers' bike and I plan building it up as tourer. Have some of the original Trek System 2 parts for it (stem, post, saddle, seatpost qr).

  • Got this out yesterday, gonna give it a little sprucing up over the next week, new chain, touch up some of the paint chips etc...

  • gorgeous!!!! yours?

  • Strong page so far

  • Aside from obvious crash damage etc, is there anything to look out for on late 90's/early 00's aluminium frames?

  • Check the welds and headtube for (hairline) cracks. Stuck alumium seatposts and BB's can be really nasty. And make sure threads are OK.

  • Thanks @WimVDD

Heading to look at a early 00's Redline Monocog. It doesn't say in the ad but it looks like it's an alloy Flite one. Pictures show what look like a clean bike but just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into.

  • As far as I remember Redline were famous for their BMX's back in the nineties. Don't know much more about them. O yes, this: they made the alu frames for DEAN (the Ti-guys).

  • I definitely didn't need another bike but this was too cool to pass on.

2004 Redline Flite Monocog. (maybe too new for here?)

  • Retro mountainbikes are pre 1998. 😉
    (Probably pre disc brake).

  • Thanks. It's got quite a few 'retro' parts on it. Ringle headset, profile bmx hubs on sun rims, geox sedona tyres etc.

  • That Trek 970 went for £235.

I found that too much, my max was somewhere in the £180 type of bracket for a 25 year old bike in unconfirmed condition and unconfirmed components when all you have to go on are a couple of dodgy pics on eBay.

Am I being unrealistic in what I could pick up this type of bike for?

  • That's not bad, 235 GBP... As I said, these were very decent quality bikes back then. But I must confess this one doesn't really makes me wild (most Trek bikes don't, actually). I think there's nicer things to find for that money. But on the other hand, you'll always end up spending more money than these bikes are actually worth (when you want to rebuild it to original spec). A 2010 groupset goes for less money than one from around 1990.

  • Thanks; interesting.

I'm not at all bothered about period correct or anything like that. I'm just looking for a versatile steel bike with no suspension and components I can service myself.

Not sure where the sweet spot is between desirable retro and alu BSO.

  • It does seem a lot of money but I've noticed values go up quite quickly over the last year-18months. Maybe a sign of things to come.

  • Have a question for you people

I’ve just bought a tandem 26r. The brake posts are too high for Canti, so am I right that either a direct mount centrepull (aka U brakes?) or Maguras will fit?

  • Specifically interested in Maguras, pretty sure it had direct cantis on it before from a fuzzy photo of it built the seller has.

  • OK found this on Magura site, I think ‘A’ is the centre of the boss, measurement is 29mm+/-2 to bottom of brake suface (for the modern ones at least, but I guess they’re unlikely to have changed the mount height).
