Something from Timefactors maybe, possibly the Precista or possibly Christopher Ward (probably top end of budget but the clearance bit often has some decent stuff). Orient also do some decent divers in that price bracket, including some "interesting" ones:
Although personally for a birthday watch, particularly 40th, I'd be tempted to get something a bit dressier.

Its Quartz but its a very very good quartz. Looks awesome in real life. A new latest model one will be over your budget (still worth considering if you can up your budget) but you can buy a whole bunch of older ones second hand for less than £500.
Its a very nice looking, very functional and good value watch. Should make @ejay2.0 happy too.
My dad has offered to buy me something for my 40th Birthday (2 years ago LOL).. up to the value of £500.. so I was thinking another watch.. I like divers / subs.. current watch list is..
Tag heuer Carrera Chrono
Tag heuer 1000 professional
Seiko SKX007
Hamilton Khaki x-wind
Couple of digital Casios..
I would possibly think about selling the hamilton to add to the pot.. I have had a Steinhart Ocean one in the past. Any suggestions..
