From my very limited understanding Churchill was quite enthusiastically racist towards some groups, more than average for those days.

Of course it would rile some if the statue comes down, if that's a reason to do or not do things we may as well give up cycling as well ;)

He also changed his mind about various racial groups throughout his lifetime.

For example as a young man he wrote some pretty nasty stuff about Muslims but later in life wrote how he admired Muslium society, even to the point that some relatives feared he might convert.
