  • I've got a seized square taper BB cup stuck in an aluminium frame. I took it to a shop and they couldn't get it out, and recommended I find a framebuilder to get it out. Teeth on the cup are mangled. Anyone able to help or have recommendations?

  • There aren't too many framebuilders that work in aluminium in the UK. Perhaps another mechanic/shop?

  • If you love the frame, take it to a pro.

On a budget or don't care:
Open up a hacksaw, then close it again with the blade in the bb shell.

Cut very, very, very, carefully until almost through the cup. This might release the pressure and allow movement with the tool. You may need to make two cuts and give the cup a bop with a mallet/flathead.

    Then get the shell re-tapped..

Might be a way to do something clever with a threaded rod, the extraction tool, a bunch of bolts and washers but if the cup teeth are gone it probably won't work.

  • Shop are turning the tool in the correct direction and using a leverage bar?

    :D

  • If the cup is steel, you could weld a lever to it.

  • Feed the threads with light oil or some freeing agent for a few days.
    Try again.
If you manage to get a tool in there again, getting it stuck in a vice ,
and using the frame for leverage is very efficient.

  • Shops are very busy right now..probably cant be ask with the faff. There are easier pickings at the moment.

  • The frame is definitely something I want to keep so the hacksaw method is a bit brutal.

Ive seen the bolt/washer method but I think the teeth are too minced for that now.

  • The frame is definitely something I want to keep so the hacksaw method is a bit brutal.

It's only as brutal as you are hamfisted. It's pretty easy to be careful with it and avoid damaging the shell. It's also quite possible to cut a couple mm into the shell, chase the thread and carry on regardless.

  • It looks steel so welding on a lever might be a good first option.

  • The whole cartridge is inside though so it's not as simple as just cutting through the cup. Id have to knock out the axle and bearings first.

  • Cut the cup with a Dremel.

  • Might need to hacksaw the axle off to properly manoeuvre a dremel, but seconding this. Finding someone with a bench vice and a sawz all would make it much easier.

  • Hi have you managed to release the non drive side and if so try spraying from that side I have a vice if you wanna try that it’s been very successful for me in the past cheers k

  • So, I got my old man to give me some help with this and after a tonne of penetrating fluid, knocking the axle out and fashioning a tool, its out!

  • Old man skills on point. My dad would have undoubtedly taken a similar approach.

  • nicely done, i had a similar issue last week, a Halfords POS that a mate's son had 20 years ago. It had been left in the garden and a shrub had grown over it so he had to hack back 20 years growth before handing it to me.

Gave it to me and asked me to make it work for him. Penetrating fluid and lots of leverage still didnt work as the tool kept slipping out (ooh err missus).

Took it to a mate and once we had the tool bolted down it eventually freed up

BB so screwed that chainset is hard up against chainstay

  • My tool which fits perfectly but I didn't have a long enough bolt to secure it to the BB and it kept slipping even though I had an extension bar to provide extra leverage

  • My mates tool bolted down and long spanner for leverage
