He's just going to end up doing damage to his own side - how many Tory MPs are over 70 I wonder?
I'm struggling to see why Rees-Mogg is fighting so hard over this one. I appreciate that he may well think a bit of parliamentary pantomime is more important than actually having a functioning representative democracy, but it seems an odd choice to be making a stand on. Unless they think the older members of the party are less likely to toe the party line when compared to more junior members who still have aspirations of climbing the oh-so-greasy Tory pole.
Aside from some Machievelian manoeuvre that must be the main reason, he is a real stickler for procedure of the house. The few times I enjoy him speaking it is usually about parliamentary tradition.
