• Hey there,

    I have a Genesis Equilibirum disc 20 from 2016,
I wanted to upgrade the stock fork (which is alloy steerer carbon fork) to a
full carbon fork with a bit more clearance, but I think I missed something or misunderstood some things about tapered steerer...

According to manufacturer website my frame has a TAPERED 1 1/8" - 1 1/2" steerer tube, so I found that the Kinesis CXD would be a good fit: https://www.kinesisbikes.co.uk/Catalogue/Forks/Cyclocross/CXD

Started to dissassemble the thing to try and fit the new fork, and I'm not sure what's going on, looks like the new fork steerer is way too big to me..

Basically the stock fork seems to be a straight steerer tube,
I have a hope headset and what I think is a Hope Tapered 1.5" Headset Reducer Crown so the straight fork steerer can fit in the tapered steerer tube as you can see on the pic,

    original setup:

    old fork vs new fork:

Now when I put the new fork in, I don't see how I could fit a bottom cup and bearings as the fork steerer is arealy huge and taking lots of space in the frame steerer tube...

New fork in the frame without bottom cup or bearings:

what did I miss? is there different diameters for tapered steerer forks?

    thanks in advance

(also I removed the hope bottom cup thing and and can't put it back in...)

  • Have you measured the old steerer? Could be 1 1/8 - 1 1/4 taper

  • The fork will look bigger - the headset you need will be external and take up the difference, if that makes sense.

  • Hey thanks, that would make sense I was not aware of 1 1/8 1 1/4 taper... I will try to measure, but I can see the setup with stock fork is usinga hope reducer crown, to reduce the frame steerer diameter so the fork steerer can fit.

however I dont understand why they spec it 1 1/8 1 1/2 on the genesis website.. the fork I bought should be able to fit I just don;t know what kind of bottom cup to get from hope..

also why don't they use metric system 😅

  • Hey thanks, do you have any example of this kind of headset? Do you reckon hope does one where I could buy just the bottom part (their Pick’n’Mix thing..)

    cheers!

  • mmmh so did some research about hope headsets, to me it seems like something like this could work:

but the crown race seat diameter on the new fork seems larger than 40mm, I don't have a vernier but it looks more like 44mm when i measure roughly this area:

  • You will have to fit external 44mm bottom headset cup. You don't need crown race. It's integrated in the fork.
The cup will add 15mm to your virtual fork lenght which will relax your head and seat angle throwing off the geometry of the bike

  • Ah damn okay, so i guess it's not a good idea, I really like the geometry as it is,
I would be probably better off finding another fork that fits directly... does that mean i need to get a straight fork like the stock one ?

    thanks for the infos!

  • Yep. 1 and 1 1/8 non tapered fork.

  • Thanks! Now just need to send this one back and find another fork...

I don't clrearly understand why in the frame specs it says tapered 1 1/8" - 1 1/2" if you can't
put a tapered fork without messing the geo...
