I get what you're saying about the finish but it was always one of my favourite things about the guitar! You can't see it from the photo but it's metallic purple. Back in the day I had a pair of patent leather bovver boots that matched it perfectly!
That said, I can see it looking good with a nice purple to natural stained burst and oil finish (depending on the quality of wood underneath). Ummmm decisions.
