I think so, it's always quite superficial, non-offensive but it works.

His stage act is (or certainly used to be) much subtler and more intelligent than his TV act. Some acts really don't translate well from the comedy club to the TV; you can build things over 30 or 60 minutes interacting with a live audience that can't really be reproduced remotely. Sketch shows and panel shows reduce those acts to their rudest components. Tim Vine is another example.
